Back injury--calling all rehabbers

With humans in medicine we use cooler temperatures after neurological injuries because it decreases inflamation and swelling in order to increase blood flow through the affected area and to prevent more permanent dammage.

I am just wondering if it would be beneficial to keep the cage temperatures for this little one in the safe low range for a month or so?

I had wondered about that.

He doesn't have a light over him at the moment so there is no extra heat.

Nothing has really changed. Today I put him outside in a little screen exo-terra. The weather is perfect--cloudy, bright, temps in the high 60s and humid. I cleaned the gallon jar I'm keeping him in and found a big stool, so he's been eating. I'll see if I can get a picture of him to post.

He has some limited movement but is not releasing his foot once he is gripping something. He's having a lot of trouble keeping himself upright. I have a bunch of sprigs of a plant that sprouts roots out of everywhere so a clipping stays alive in humid conditions. I've stripped off most of the bigger leaves and just given. His jar--its a decorative gallon gar that has a curve inwards at the lip to it so the fruit flies "tend" to stay in.

He wants to go up, so will end up holding on but upside down. I try to not give him many places to go up, but even on a horizontal branch, he'll roll upside down.

He makes it or not. I actually have a lot of hope he might recover enough to be someone's pet. It will take time. I used to breed mini Dachshunds and although I didn't ever have a back problem in any of my dogs, I have read enough to know that a completely paralyzed dog who can't even void their bladder can recover to the point you would not notice anything was wrong given just crate rest. If he turns out to be a she, I will cull, but I thought he was male at the time of the injury. I have basically left him alone to get on with healing himself. I think the fresh air and filtered sunlight will do him good. He hasn't been under a UVB light yet. I'll have to dig a compact one out to put over his jar for a few hours a day. @kinyonga

This gives you an idea of what I mean when I try to explain that he can't keep himself upright. He needs to have the muscles in his back and body working well if he doesn't have good use of his hind legs and tail. The second picture was taken a few seconds later after I straightened him up. He does move around his enclosure.

The dark area on his body and back are where he was splooshed in the door. Any lateral deviation in the pictures is just the way he was positioned when the picture was taken. His spine looks pretty normal externally--no obvious kinks/deviations or anything. @kinyonga @Decadancin

He could be a lot worse, I agree with you it will likely be slow going getting him healed to the point where he needs to be. If he turns out to be a boy, and becomes a special needs, and gets to the point where it's safe for him to be rehomed and can be shipped I have no issue taking him. He will get plenty of sun here and I have dealt with jackson's before. I know these guys do better with even higher humidity but you know me I adjust well to my individual chams. He would be spoiled here. And I have an amazing exotic vet just 20 minutes away. Just keep me in mind sweetie just in case <3

That's terrific, Andee. His mother is my original female gracilior Giselle who herself is an incredibly robust animal, still going strong three years after being imported as an older gravid female and having produced a lot of babies. His sire is that gorgeous orange male you might remember pictures I posted of. Giselle has produced quite a few orange babies when bred to the blue YingLong. I am hoping for a lot of orange from this clutch. Giselle's babies are really strong.

Time will tell. I have hope because he does grasp with at least one hind leg and he has movement to the tip of his tail as well in both feet. There has to still be a tremendous amount of inflammation from the original injury. I'm sure there will be improvement once that goes down. I was just diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy so will be able to get answers from my medical doctors about nerve damage and healing of damaged nerves. ;)

Yeah I have massive nerve damage in my right arm and shoulder because of a small incident with an IV hitting a nerve connected to my right thumb. And I have dealt with the inflammation in odd ways because nothing helped prescription wise. So I had to go a lot of interesting routes. Surprisingly cold makes me worse (but I am far into my nerve pain and I don't have much of immediate recovery left), now heat makes me better. I reduce pain with pure CBD with mild 1% THC at most (so it's still considered medical marijuana (hoping this is ok to say)) though it's completely legal in any form in Cali, I go out of my way to keep my medical card up to date just because I really only use medical based stuff and it's the first time I have ever taken anything like this. I don't even smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. The only other thing I take is psyche meds. But the CBD on board 24 hours 7 days a week has reduced my inflammation massively, when before I was taking 4 advil every 6 hours, with 2 tylenol twice a day, and once a day I would also have a flexiril and anti-inflammatory that didn't react badly with advil. It was getting dangerous and ridiculous because I was getting almost no pain relief. So I knew we had to adjust somehow .___.

After all the rambling it's all about saying I get the nerve damage thing sadly. And that it can take a long time to see any real progress even in the beginning. He is definitely showing massive leaps already.

Hopefully you guys both get better, and can learn more about nerves! Nerves are just so interesting.

Idk if I will get better other than just the management right now CJ, I've gotten mildly worse until I started the CBD the last two years. And my right arm is my dominant arm so the constant need to use it doesn't help with healing XD. I have to put it in a sling when it's too bad and needs to rest otherwise I use it without thinking.

Wow, I can't imagine going through that, you are strong! Hopefully there is a method that you find that will help! I will pray for you. :)
