You really need to be more specific than "how many inches."

Yah it all depends on what your basking temp is, and needs to be. Other than that you just need to make sure you cham can't touch the light and get burned. If you are referring to how far away from the UVB bulb I would put it as close a possible. That's what I would do simply because I don't think a cham can get too much UVB from a proper light.
