Best location for the uvb strip in the viv

Where would be the best location for the uvb strip as the majority i have seen are sitting on top on the viv but I am not going for a screen viv due to the climate and would like something that will hold the heat better so would be going for a wooden viv.

But can the where would be the best location for the uvb?
All comments and advice welcome oh and please be gentle not be here for too long :)

the uvb light isn't really used for heat. they actually don't emit a lot heat and definitely not enough heat for the basking spot for a chameleon. you need a separate basking light for your cham. any household incandescent bulb will suffice. so you can put the uvb light on top of the cage and then put a basking light on top of the cage as well.

also, what kind of cage are you going to get? what kind of environment factors make you want to stay away from a screen cage?

Sorry yes i know Ineed to use a basking lamp also it was just the location for the uvb as I was going to use a vivexotic ax model as in the uk we dont really have the right climate for them to be in a screen I know a lot of people in the uk have them but I have been told it is easier to control in a wooden viv with our climate

i've only placed my uvb light on top of the cage. let some others chime in and see what they think about other locations for it. :)

My uv runs diagonally on back wall.my basking light is on the top clamped to a piece of wood attached to top of viv. If my temps get too high it is easy to raise it up a bit. I don't like it resting on the top as Popeye often hangs upside down hanging on to the mesh ( I'm sure he does it to annoy me. Lol) you don't want it to get too hot to cause a burn.

Thankyou I am trying to do so much research atm I know the basics of what i need but im just trying to work out options for using the wooden viv its just being uk based we arent very fortunate with our tempratures over here :)

just put it in the top just the same, why woiuld it matter that its a wood viv?

i'm assuming you are having a hood for your lights right? i have a few pics of wood setups i've done in my past posts somewhere

Just as it has a wooden top and dont really want to go cutting holes out of the top not to good with a saw lol

Lol I just remembered I saw a pic of your viv yesterday I just had another look and I can see the uvb across the back but couldnt make out the basking lamp is that int the top right corner or I that the end of your uvb tube.

I am just used to reptile that cant climb enough to get to the basking lamp but now dealing a cham that can climb anywhere and everywhere so didnt think have the basking lamp inside would be an option really

All lights should be on the top of the cage shining down. Light from the sun always shines down from above, and that is what lizards have evolved to. The tops of their bodies have more photoreceptors and heat receptors to regulate basking activity because that is where light and heat should be.

Thankyou for the advice it helps its just working everything out I wanted to avoid cutting holes in the top if possible as I say im not great with that sort of thing I can put it all together no problem but modfiying them is another story lol

Could you make a quick wood frame for the top and staple screen to it rather than making it solid? I'm not sure what your cage design is but I'm sure you could get creative without it taking too much handy work. :)

i have a heat emitter up there also as up here it can get pretty chilly at night. Would it be possible to change the top of your viv to screen? The more ventilation the better. Before this viv i had an all wood viv with glass doors and ventilator vents cut out of side. It worked pretty well. I had my basking light inside with a cage round it but the little blighter used to climb all over the cage ( again just to spite me. Different cham) nothing happened to him but now i am more educated in cham husbandry i realise it was an accident waiting to happen.

Lol I was looking at a vivexotic ax model which is all wood aart from the glass doors but maybe the top could be replaced but im not to sure as my other viv is made by the same people and the top provides support to the sides as the all lock in together holding the hole thing together so not sure if i could work around that or maybe replace the top with something else.

Thats what i thought about doing putting it inside and putting a guard over it but I was also thinking about utilising the space for him once its set up and he gets bigger im going to have a search on the net to see if I can find one with a screen top to it to solve the issue as I am not to sure how i would be able to replace the top on it there is alway the possibilty of just cutting a circle out for the basking lamp and maybe a hole for the strip and fitting the hood to the outside what size strip do you have in yours.

Thanks for the advice and sorry for all the questions everyone:)

I think mine is from reptile one. The top has a wood surround and a wooden piece up the middle with two screen panels.

Been having a look at reptile one as one of my other vivs that is reptile one has a solid top but an opening to the back which has small mesh covering but I have had no luck so far you would think someone else would have designed something like that for chams oh well will keep looking see what i can find LOL:)

The uv is a t5 from Arcadia 3 ft.

Thankyou for that so a 3ft is sufficient size for 2x2x4 viv.

The internet is not proving very good for research atm as for people in the uk I have seen its very hard to keep the humidity and temp up in a screen viv but they say you can use a wooden viv as you cant mist properly to keep humidity up and you need to add drainage also but you seem to have managed to do all of that and not had any problems thanks for the help again
