Bindi update:Still no eggs and VERY worried

If you followed my other threads you know my Bindi has been confirmed to have eggs since dec28th. She is in her normal tank (20 gal glass and yes i know it sucks) (we chose not to move her to her large 4 ft one yet) and there is 10 inches of soil sand mix on one half of the tank. Every day she scratches the sides, digs out the two corners and then rests on her perches. She still eats a coupl crickets a day and i mist her twice and she drinks. I keep thinking she will lay today, no today, no today, etc etc with no results. Maybe she doesnt like her laying area? maybe the feeding and misting is disturbing her?

I dont know if 'i should move her now that she has been digging or scratching for at least a week and a half or so to her laying bin or just leave her alone to do her course? I dont know if i should take her back to the vet? i dont know if i should mover her to her 4ft terrarium that has a large potted plant in it?

i am worried sick every day and would love to talk this through with someone like jann or kinyonga or another person who has been through this a lot, if you would be willing to PM me your phone number. I am up late in bed and cant decide if tomorrow am before i leave to work i should move her to her bin for the day but dont want to stop the progress that she has done.

Is there signs i can look for that she is becoming eggbound? so far she still seems pretty active and healthy.

Thanks in advance :( -Curtis and Harmony (worried parents of Bindi the female veiled)

Is the substrate moist enough that she can dig a hole that won't collapse on her?
Is it actually a hole she is digging or is she just scratching at the corner of the cage?
She doesn't see you watching her when she's digging, does she?

Signs of eggbinding include but are not limited to...sitting low in the cage, eyes shut during the day, not eating, lethargic, may dig a hole and fill it in as though she had laid eggs but she didn't, etc. If some of these signs occur then its time to be concerned.

I've told others on here I've had a panther go almost 40+ days before laying. I'd say if shes scratching and digging make sure your substrate is good like Kinyonga said. She may not like the consistency and doesn't feel safe laying in it yet. They are women. They are born picky in all species!

kinyonga- its more of her moving the dirt out of the corners. it does kind of fall back in a little but pretty moist. it is not a defined hole but more of a cone small at bottom large at top. she has dug down to nearly the bottom but it might not be moist enough. i have tried to mist the soil but again do not want to disturb her too much. if she is not digging/resting can i then go in and test the soil?

yank- good to hear she might just not be ready yet and yes trust me i live with a wife and female pitbull, both difficult but I love them!

oh yeah i have a towel wrapped around her tank with a spy hole, but i do add crickets and mist one-2 times a day. i make sure we never make eye contact if possible..

I think you definitely need to make sure the moisture level is right. If your substrate isn't moist enough, misting it probably won't help much. You may need to actually pour some water in it. Of course you don't want it to be too moist, but from your description it sounds like it could use a bit more water. Dig a test hole or two, and she might even use it when she does lay.

when my girl got big, i suspected she had eggs for a couple of months, from size, color, and general scratching, pissy, and antsy behavior. it was probably 4 months.

If/when they are digging its best to feed and water them when they are back up in the branches not when they are digging. I still am not sure if she is really digging or just moving soil around. :(

You said..."if she is not digging/resting can i then go in and test the soil?"...yes.

I will pm my # but am not sure it will help. I will be up & hubby off to work by 7 am my time (mountain) give me a call if you need to talk.

I know my girl dug around for about a week, then I moved her into an 'outside' laying bin (just a box with only one branch and 12" of sandy soil) and she made a hole and laid the same day. I think it would be worth a try to get her in a bigger bin with nothing else to do and see if she goes for it.

Laurie-Thanks for the chat. It was helpful and re-assuring that i am not completely crazy and/or doing the wrong thing. I just got her situated in the bin. I added a short stick for her to rest on but not make it to the top of the screen like she did last attempt. i put her normal lights on it with timer. I dug 2 test holes for her.

David-Im gonna give it a shot today, thanks for the input.

Kinyonga-After i just moved her to the boin i was able to test and play with the soil/sand she had. It did appear on the drier side but would hold a tunnel if i dug one. I think you are right she never really dug a true hole or tunnel yet. more-so she is moving dirt out of the corners.

as i explained to laurie i have witnessed her moving the dirt with her hind legs like i have seen in so many youtube videos etc so i thought she is laying...maybe she still has not quite been ready but now shes back in the big bin for the day/eve.

I am still taking posts/advice from you experts out there so if you think im missing something please let me know.

Otherwise Thank you everybody and hope for us i dont want to go to the next step and want her to lay naturally bad! I will post tonight with any new news..-C

Update bindi-more advice please!

Ok so i got home late tonight 8:30pm and went to go ck on her in her bin. she was on the branch and the 2 test holes i had dug were completely covered as if they never existed. there was another very small hole started under a little dish i had in there for feeding. i sprayed her and she drank and i thought maybe she laid! but NO.

I moved her to her tank to sleep tonight and will try again tomorrow. i also dug a hole for her in her tank just in case she wants to lay tonight but i noticed all activity stops at night and she sleeps sound. she did eat 5 small calcium dusted meal worms tonight also very readily.

Im worried she tried to lay and did not...as long as she appears active and healthy i want to hold off on oxytocin but it seams like it might be our only chance??

Anyone??

Does she look any thinner? Could she have laid in one of the holes that she covered? They normally dig in the late afternoon or evening and then lay that night or first thing the next morning. Personally I don't think it's a good idea to keep moving her and messing with her. Also it not good to feed them late in the day because they need to bask for a few hours after eating to be able to digest their food.

You said..."Kinyonga-After i just moved her to the boin i was able to test and play with the soil/sand she had. It did appear on the drier side but would hold a tunnel if i dug one. I think you are right she never really dug a true hole or tunnel yet. more-so she is moving dirt out of the corners."...if she is only moving substrate around then I would say she's not ready yet.

Are you moving her back and forth to a larger bin? If so, I wouldn't be doing that. I leave mine in the cage until they start to dig as a rule....then move them to the larger bin and leave them there until they lay the eggs. The odd one I have moved to the bin and left there even though it hadn't started digging in the bin in its cage. IMHO moving them back and forth is not a good idea.

My large bin consists of a 65 liter rubbermaid container with a lid. I remove most of the middle of the lid and screen over the hole I cut in it. I fill the bin with sand at least 12" deep and moisten it so it will hold a tunnel. I add a branch for the female to sit on when she doesn't want to dig. I put her in when she has started digging in her cage, put the lid on and put a light over the screen in the lid. Make sure that you don't bake her. She can be fed and watered while in the bin when she is not digging as long as you remove all the extra insects each time so they won't chew on her or the eggs.

Hope this helps and that she lays them soon.

Thank you Jann. i did check the sand and no eggs. she is still fat. I also appreciate the rieminder about late feeding i did read that somewhere but forgot and was worried she was hungry since i had to work late.

K-i appreciate it i will keep her in her tank today to see if she digs and then probably move to her bin set up like you said and keep it that way when i confirm she is digging.

Ill keep you both updated

So I did decide to move her to her bin but instead made it very comfy and a place she can spend some time if needed. I added a vine and a few atificial cover leaves on her perch.

I re-tested her sand to make sure its perfect and holds a tunnel. I have her regular light schedule going. She will now stay in her bin until she lays!!

I will keep you all posted, thanks again!:)
