Black

i noticed my gf's veiled turns dark in the sun almost black but he is not stressed or anything and when he i sin his cage he turns green, maybe its got something to do with uvb? not to sure

is one half that you dont see lighter than the other half? your keeping is good! like you've read, chameleons will turn darker to absorb heat, and if he is more under his uv light than the basking than that is just his preference. youngins like a little less temperature than adults, not by much though. my chameleon prefers her uv spot more than her basking as well and she is always a light colour, but she is also almost 7 months old. i wouldnt worry about it too much. how long have you had him for? it seems like there isnt any stress going on, he may STILL be getting used to his new home. hes still a baby

how well can you see him? if you can alwayse see him then he may feel exposed..
myne did this while young until i made a hiding spot in the corner where he couldnt be seen at all..then he stayed in hiding all the time..so i hung plants on the front of his cage and he didnt spend as much time hiding.
Now hes older and he turns the same sleeping colors when im holding him or hes walking in my floor..I think he likes it.
hope this helps!

I just went into his room after lights off. He was walking around on the side of the wall.. He has never done that before after lights out. He was also really low.
I don't know what to do... Is a vet visit in order?

A vet visit certainly couldn't hurt...

I suggest you walk away for the night....don't look, don't monitor....then see how things look tomorrow morning. If you are still concerned, call and make the appointment.

when your chams on the top screen can he get back down off it to go bask or go do what he does just asking this because when my veiled was younger and climbed upside down on the top screen he couldnt suss out how to get back down and he got stressed so i raised the plants in the cage so he could grab hold of them and kind of do a backflip ( sumthing that he used to do dunno if they all do it ) of the top screen onto the plant. mite not be this just a thought

Have you tried raising it yet? My veiled gets dark like that if his basking spot isn't a foot or so above my head.

Black baby chameleon

I got a female when she was quite young 3-4 months. She had a dark coloured vine to bask on and she did turn pretty much black when on it. We also had a ficus outside her tank, which I am assuming as a baby she probably had in her tank and felt very comfortable in. But, I had done a little research and found that the ficus can cause eye irritation with its sap. So I did not want one in her cage. She tried to get to that ficus for hours and when she went down to the bottom of the cage to try and get to it that way, she did turn quite black and did get exhausted after a while. So I coaxed her back up into the plants she had in her tank, and removed the ficus from her vision. The problem was solved. Take a look outside or above her tank.:p

Veildowner - He can get down and go up at his own will. I've seen him. So I think we can rule this out.

Pssh - I will definitely raise his enclosure.

Boochameleon - I don't think there is any thing outside that is enticing him, but I will check to be sure.

Thanks!:)

I added some plants to create a little veil between him and the rest of the room. They hang down from the ceiling. Here is a picture of the current cage:

When I went in the room to take a picture of the cage, he was on the ceiling black again!

This is a picture from above.

I quoted Boochameleon because he or she had the same idea as you, skully23, I'm positive nothing is enticing him.

Yah, I'm kinda dumbfounded. I hope someone who has had this experience speaks up! Does anyone have an idea that hasn't been previously discussed?

Maybe you should take a picture of the surrondings? Maybe someone could point out something that a chameleon would go for? I mean to you..you think there is nothing but someone else might have the eye for something you over look.

If not its ok, hope someone finds out

Here are some pictures of the immediate area.

To the side is just my cluttered desk:

And on the top, where he is climbing, are only cute pictures of bees and ants. Maybe they make him hungry :p

**Sorry for the bad quality**

I bought my panther a week ago, and he has only been brown and black since I got him. I increased his light from a 55w to a 60w yesterday, and he spent the day light colors today. Try to increase the heat a little??

Alright, will do. I have a 60 watt now, what wattage would you recommend? The ambient temperature is 75F..
Maybe it is the temps! What would you guys recommend?

I found a 65 watt FLOOD light. Would the flood generate heat?

Saying that your cham is younger than mine then I wouldn't go higher. At that age mine had a 34w and he was still gaping once in awhile. Now he has a 60w and he is around 6-7 months.
