Bowser has Passed

today I woke up expecting supplies in the mail to make bug juice, instead i found my poor sick boy Bowser on the floor of his cage, dead... R.I.P. to my poor guy, I loved him so much and tried so hard to make him better but this is now my second chameleon, and my second one to die short in its life. I dont know how he got sick, but I miss him so much right now its physically painful. First my dog in Jan. and now my chameleon in Feb., 2016 is a terrible year.

Really sorry to hear about Bowser as well as your dog. That's really tough loosing both so close to each other. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you both very much, and thank you admin for moving the thread, I had no clue there was a section for this. Ill post his autopsy findings when I get them also

The vet got back to me with the results of the autopsy; he had several absceses in his abdomen and in samples of cells taken from various parts of the body there were increased something and the vet said it couldve been some form of reptile cancer or something. Basically he was a heck of a lot sicker than we thought so I was very happy to learn he didnt die because of my care specifically. How do you guys deal with loosing a cham? Because all I want to do is pack up everything and hide it but I have a bunch of plants that I dont just want to throw away..

So sorry to hear about you losing not only your chameleon, but your dog. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good we take care of our pets, they just get sick. I am glad you have some piece mind knowing how he died. I am sure you gave him the best you could while he was with you, even though it may have only been for a short while.

So sorry to hear about Bowser and your dog :(
I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that you gave Bowser the best care and love possible and that you did everything you possibly could to save him. I know how tough it is to loose a pet..it's so sad because they are truly a member of the family. 2016 is just beginning so don't throw away his plants yet....you never know what good things may come in the future :)

This is why I love the forums so much, you guys just get it. None of my friends understood how he was part of my family and how lonely my apartment feels without him to take care of. I think I just have really bad luck with Chameleons haha I keep wanting to take apart his cages and put them in storage so that i'll have more free space since i only have a small one bedroom, but then I dont want to have to throw away the plants because I know there are superworms and the beetle form in most of them since my guy stopped eating at the end. Does anyone have any suggestions for mailing superworms btw? I told my dad Id mail him my leftover 1,000 for his bearded dragon but I keep them in a large breeder box with vent holes and there is grain so not sure about the logistics on dealing with that.

When my first chameleon died I could not believe how sad I was. He was not a "people cham", he was ornery and mean and every time I could get him to hand feed or climb on my hand to go outside I felt I had really done something! Regardless, he was my pet and seeing the empty cage without his grumpy little face was hard. I ended up disinfecting the cage and putting it away, but after a few months I found myself trolling around on breeder websites and the forum classifieds. So sorry for your loss- don't let it discourage you from owning another chameleon.

I find I do the same thing. I take it apart, clean it, and put it in storage out of sight. It sort of helps to clarify my good memories of whoever lived there. But most times it depends on what actually happened. If it was something I can trace back to my own actions it takes a lot longer. If it was something impossible to detect or diagnose, its a bit sooner. I've kept Malaysian leaf frogs in the past pretty successfully, but not for a few years. Last year I bought two males that looked in good shape, they arrived just fine, I set them up as I had before, and felt all was well. Both died a month later right out of quarantine. Necropsy was inconclusive. I felt horribly guilty about their whole ordeal from the wild and blamed myself for being too complacent. I lost two aviary birds to a newly arrived rescue dog because I trusted him too soon. That one is still raw years later even though the dog is no longer around to remind me. Most of the time I gradually find myself looking up husbandry info online for another pet and that's my clue about moving on.
