breeding D. Hydei Fruit Fly

breeding fruit flies is super easy but you have to setup your new cultures before your old ones run out.
you need a few things:
fruit fly media
mold inhibitor (somethin paraben is commonly used i forget the full name)
deli cups w breathable lids
aspen
i suggest you check out dendroboard.com froggers keep d.hydei and d.mela all the time there is plenty of information there on where to get stuff and how to make homemade

Perfect. I will go to the store tonight. My FF don't have mites so if I get on it I should be in good shape other then I don't have the containers to put them in but will try to buy a few from the deli dept at a local store and use tight mesh screen doubled upwith a few hole in the lids.

So that's where all my mites and nats came from!!
I was wondering where my infestation came from So how do you get rid of all them? been putting soapy water in the pots and replaced the top 1 1/2" of soil with sand....grrr

If they are in all of your cultures you must throw them out! Thankfully I only ordered one culture from Josh's - I threw it out and ordered from somebody else. When I contacted Josh's they told me that the mites wouldn't hurt anything. Yeah well they also prevent the flies from producing much at all. BUT I really like Josh's media so I am torn on weather to keep ordering from him.
Also, you can buy mite paper to prevent the mites from moving from culture to culture. http://www.buyfruitflies.com/shop_antimite.html

I went thru the same ordeal with Josh's. If you buy some mite spray and spray some paper towels and put those under your cultures the mites will die. I was friggin itching for a week before I realized what it was. After getting them on the paper towels it was all good. His cultures do make the most flies of any Ive ever bought.

wondering if the best of both worlds would be to get the media from Josh's and get the cultures from snailtails?

i could be wrong but i dont think he will be doing anymore shows here in indiana.a fresh culture of hydei take about 2 weeks or more to get going. i use josh's media and flies. ive never noticed any mites but again ive never looked for them. although smaller, melano's cultures dont take as long and usually get three times the amount of flies..

Regarding Mites...There are two types of mites found in fruit fly cultures. The first is white grain mites that are attracted to fruit fly media (wet or dry). These mites are in every culture, but are kept at bay by the fruit flies. They are harmless to the fruit flies and your animals.
The other type of mite is red/brown and attacks the pupae of the fruit fly cultures. This type of mite will result in cultures with lots of larvae and pupae with every few fruit flies ever hatching. To ward off this mite, keep older cultures away from newer cultures. These are the mites commonly referred to as "fruit fly mites".
No one can ship a fruit fly culture without any grain mites, but you should never have grain mites taking over a culture until the flies aren't competing with them anymore (either the culture has run through its cycle or the environment wasn't right for production such as overheating in transit).
The mite life cycle is around 28 days. So, when you get a producing culture from us, you should be throwing it out after 7 days if you are nervous about grain mites. Keeping them longer than that will lead to the mites hatching in the culture.
