breeding house flies

Does anyone breed their own house flies? I want to try to
breed my own. If you do, would you be so kind as to explain
how you do it, with pictures. That would be so very awsome.
I know I could order them online, but when you need large
quantaties, often, It's easier to just breed them. Thanks in advance.
Till next time, make a great day,

Cyndi and John

All I can say is they had better be the "flightless" type. I got a batch of the kind that can fly a couple of years ago when I first got into chameleons. They got out of the cages any time I opened up the door. I had them all over the house. I had sticky pest strips hanging all over my house to get rid of them. It was the dead of winter with snow on the ground and my husband had to go to the hardware store to get the pest strips. He asked for six of them. The guy at the store asked "Just what kind of bug investation do you have?" We laugh about it now but it was not funny then. Our cats were knocking over stuff jumping around trying to catch the flies. It was a blast watching the chams try to catch them but not worth it. I tried to find a supplier in the USA for the flightless type but had no luck. Even paid for some only to be refunded because they could not fill the order. If anyone has a source for the flightless ones that can actually fill and order, let me know!

Buy the maggots from Grubco... You can get 5,000 for like $35, throw them in the fridge, and use them as needed. All you've really gotta do is dry them out and they pupate up, give it 7-10 days and you've got more flies than you know what to do with. They do fly, though, so you'll need to keep an eye on them if they're in the house.

Keep this in mind for an evil prank for someone you don't like (dump the pupa in a houseplant, and you'll be gone for 4-7 days before they get swarmed with flies... Works like a charm, we did it to a beauty school up in Utah).

Thanks so far for the info. My chameleons have their own room in the basement, I'm not too worried about them getting out into the house. My little dog goes nuts chasing the ones that do stray into the house. It's cute watching him try to get them!! I like the way you think Tyler, If I need any more vindictive ideas, I know who to call!! :D

Try these guys: www.spiderpharm.com

I just ordered some pupae form them for my group of baby melleri (need flies for the first several months).

I got 100 grams of housefly pupae for $5.00 + $7.00 shipping.

I had a great hatch out rate so far, and the melleri are having a ball eating them (and so are the deremensis and little veileds).

It's a great deal, as you can keep them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, and take out as many as you'll need. Plus, it only take a few days for them to pupate - much faster than maggots.

100grams is about 5,000 flies - a lot of flies.

Plus, pupae have one, very large advantage over maggots:

maggots are hands down, the worst thing on earth.

you do realise if you just put the flies into a container, put the container into the fridge for about half an hour, the flies turn docile (almost look dead) and you can literally pick them up and put them inside the vivarium as soon as they get a bit warmer they spring back into life.
