Bug / Birdie Bread Recipe

I make a special bread similar to this for my birds now. Never thought of giving it to the crickets, lol. I make mine in mini muffin pans. That way I can take them out and freeze them. I just take out what I need for the week, and they store just great. :) That way I can make a bunch at one time ande save them.

I've eaten crickets, mealworms and other larva. the larva are actually kinda nice, nutty. So maybe any food recommendation I give should be taken with some salt, or extra icing.

Did you gutload them first? What's a good recipe for cricket gutload for human consumption? ;p

ROFL, I am bookmarking your post to show my husband later. He thought I was crazy for trying the mealworm and the cricket. :) I said I dont feed our daughter stuff I wouldn't eat and since all the animals are getting these special gut loads and extra calcium and filtered water why not try them too. He of course freaked out and refused to kiss me for the rest of the day. Big baby!

I'd be interested in your recipe :) muffin pans is a good idea, maybe I'll try that next time instead.

Crickets go best with an orange or dandelion gutload and chocolate coating. :D

My Birdy Bread
3 Packs jiffy corn bread mix
2 Eggs (including shells)
Flax Seed
Mullet
Dried fruits
Mixed nuts
(I usually get the fruits and nuts in the organic section so it will not have added sugars or salts)
Sugar free Applesauce (one cup)
V8 (enough to wet into muffin batter texture)

I take the fruits and nuts and put them in the food processor to make it into small bits. Easier for mixing and baking. Then I just bake until golden brown. Let cool, and then seal the muffins up to freeze.

Obviously I will alter this sometimes. Depends on what I have around the house.

Man I was talking to my mom about this and she about dropped dead. :D Orange or dandelion gutload, eh? I've heard of eating crickets in other cultures so they can't be THAT bad. Haha!

In the process of making it right now! Green stuff it is. Got pics for you Sandra!

definitely true. I will only feed him crumbs that fall off when I cut it. Smells good from the corn meal. I love corn bread. :) It's cooling now.
