Burning lamp

So I just got a new 75 watt bulb. The brand is all living things. It gets the while lamp burning hot and within the first day of using it I noticed the wire having what looked like melted spots right where it goes into the lamp. Should I be worried about it catching on fire? Ive been using the 50 watt bulb and had no problems but just thought my Cham would benefit from a little extra heat.

What are the temperatures under that lamp? Sounds like it's probably too hot if it's burning the screen. You might need to elevate the heat lamp off the screen or downgrade back to a lower wattage.

Sounds like its not the screen getting too hot....But the fixture wires... I think you need a better fixture if the wires are melting with a 75 watt bulb. It very well could catch fire!

Oh I didn't mean the screen. The heat gives off Is fine. But the whole lamp itself gets really hot. And I meant the electrical wire that goes into the lamp. The end that meets the lamp at the top gets hot too. And seems to have slight abrasions from the heat. Is that normal?

No its not at all.. I would get a new lamp ASAP if i were you..

Dammit guess I'll get a new one and another 50 watt. The same probably would have happened with my other lamp but I switched them. What sort of light bulbs do you guys usually use? Does your lamp ever heat as much?

I assume you are using a dome? Probably a cheapo from the Dept. store? Buy a good 1 ;) A regular house hold bulb will work. I like the color of the blue tinted reptile bulbs. All fixtures get hot....... But good 1's dont melt wires:rolleyes:

Look for the dishes with ceramic fixtures! I switched all my plastic ones In my herp room to the nice but slightly pricey ones. But very worth it. No more melted switches and wiring. It's a must. Melted wires GIGANTIC fire hazard.

Lol I got both from petstores so I thought they'd be ok. I believe one is from flukers. Which part of it is supposed to be ceramic?

The bit that the bulb actually screws into.

I use both types. I dont have any bulbs that get very hot though.

They both should be ceramic then I think. But I'll definately get a cooler bulb. Thanks guys!
