Butter worm gut load.

You can try lightly steamed and cooled butternut squash or sweet potato, but they really don't eat much. Their food source is the tebo tree and they don't eat non wood food very well. Most just keep them in the frig and feed them off.

I try feeding them but just don't be surprised if they aren't very interested.

Actually as far as the "snacks" go they are pretty healthy. They have twice the calcium as crickets. They are a little too fatty to be a staple but have a high moisture content and are easy to keep. Much better than waxworms or meal worms. My panther loves them but my veiled won't touch them. :)
 
Sawweeeeeeet! I had only planned on giving them for treats :D I don't need any worm addictions - I live in a small farm town and the closest rehab is probably 6 hours away :p so I basically do not have to feed them anything special? They are just awesome as is? keep them alive with a sweet potato or squash?
 
just be careful. If your cham appears to like them, it's not too far out of the realm of possibility to refuse to eat his norms for a few days once he's had too many of these.

I was thinking of only giving one or two when they are free ranging - just to kinda be like- see, humans can be cool- I have the good stuff- just come on out here and enjoy....

Where i'm from they serve a burger with two glazed crispy cremes as the bun at the state fair. Never experienced it myself, but i would imagine to a Cham it would be like two butter worms sandwiching a waxworm. :)
 
Wait wait- is it safe to feed them these ? I bought them at a local store selling them for fish bait. They were rather cheap and I figure I'd just grab them and see what the forums thought. I had read somewhere that someone fed them so I knew they were edible. Could they have parasites?

LOL!! That sounds gross to me! Then again I'm not a big doughnut fan- although- an occasional Krispy Kreme is a must :)

unfortunately, it's always possible. But then again it's possible with any feeder you purchase.
 
Most of the suppliers I buy from also sell fishing bait. I don't think there is any more risk than with other feeders.
 
Ok thanks- good to know. So what about these wax worms? Any nutritional value there? They also had wax worms.
 
Butterworms are great. My cham will only eat them if I offer them first thing. I think they're quite difficult to gutload so I've always just kept them in the fridge :D
