buying in bulk

Hi guys,

Neelix is starting to cost me a fortune in food, so I'm looking to buy in 'half' bulk. If I bought 50 live locusts, & he eats 3-5 per day, would I have trouble keeping them alive long enough for him to eat them all? At the moment it's costing me £2.50 for 9, online I could pay £7.50 for 50. Also, if I order 50 large ones & I'm feeding them, will they grow too big for him in the space of 2 weeks?

I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks & my chameleon baby-sitter refuses to touch crickets (I don't blame her lol) so my lucky boy is going to get nothing but his fave food for 2 weeks. If buying bulk works it would be ideal for when I'm away.

I know nothing about locusts, so i apologize for not answering ur question. But i would suggest looking into keeping/breeding mealworms or dubia or something to save money since ur cham doesnt like crickets. It isnt very hard to do and u can find all the info u need on the internet or the forum :)

He does like crickets, it's my friend who doesn't & she's looking after him lol. I am thinking about breeding my own, but I'm just so reluctant to get into bug-keeping, along with all my other animals. Practicality with probably win- I'm already getting a wormery so I can feed my axolotls cheaply. Talk about owning a zoo! lol

I personally enjoy it! The accomplishment from successfully breading bugs and keeping chameleons healthy is priceless lol

That's true. I guess it's hard with locusts, as most members are US & they're banned in US. I was thinking about pill bugs. I love pill bugs lol Suppose I ought to check if Neelix likes them first though.

Yes unfortunately they're no where to be found over here. I didn't know they could eat pill bugs. I thought they were for poo clean up in cricket bins?

I think chams can eat them. a few people seem to breed them. pill bugs are detritivores, so they eat dead wood/leaf litter, plant matter etc, I don't know if they eat animal waste but I guess if there's poop, they'll eat it? They're certainly not carrion eaters.

I found this care sheet for locusts, & I've just ordered 50 from the same site.
I'm concerned about the temperature part,

"If you are keeping locusts at room temperature DO NOT feed at all, any food they eat will not be digested properly and will decompose inside their stomachs, the locusts will then become ill and die"

This concerns me because I always keep them at room temp, & I can't stop gutloading them. I'm reluctant to by a heat lamp for feeders. will it harm my cham when he eats them?
