Cage for Baby Veiled

Hello everybody! My name is Tyler and I'm still new to Chameleon Forums. I have been on this site everyday reading about many different chameleon related things and learning a lot. So I first want to say: Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer everyone's questions! You are helping more people then just the person who posted the thread. :)

I am getting a baby veiled chameleon on June 8th, (Thanx Jann!), and I was wondering what you guys think about my set up so far.

This milk jug is my make shift dripper. It actually works and it's clean, so I'm happy about that.

The top of the umbrella plant is roughly 6.5 inches from the top of the cage.

I'm thinking about adding this plant to the setup, but i have no idea what type of plant it is. Any ideas?

That's all i have for now. I still need to get a digital thermo/hygrometer. I'm using a cheap hygrometer right now just to test out the setup.

Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated. Thank you! :)
 
Welcome to the Chameleon Forums this is a great place to learn about chameleons. Very nice to see you here doing your research before you buy your chameleon. You are off to a good start with your cage. I'm not sure what kind of plant that is, the extra one you are thinking about using. I would cover the plants you already have in there with large river rocks because veileds do eat dirt and can become impacted. Did you thoroughly wash your plants with warm soapy water and rinse very well before you put them in your cage? Veileds also eat the leaves from the plants. You also need to change the soil (repot the plant) or at least the top 3 inches with an organic potting soil with no chemicals or fertilizer in it. Even though you cover the top with large rock they will still run there tongue between the rock and make get a bit of soil. May sure the rocks are big or they can eat those too and possibably cause serious problems if not death to your cham.
With a young veiled you probably want need a basking light at first unless it's freezing in your house. Your guy should only bask at around 80 for the first few months.

I would add some horizontal vines and branches to the upper area of the cage. Here's a link to my cage to give you some ideas. Also I would suggest adding the plastic fencing to the inside of your cage to give your guy something to hand on to instead of the screen.....they lose nails which never grow back when hanging on the screen. Hello and welcome!! I use fishing line and tie plastic plants to the side of the cage closer to the top. This gives them more places to hide and feel safe. It also gives them more area to drink from. I put the basking lamp above one of the tied plants (they like to be as high as they can get), measure the temp there as it will be the closest to the heat source. U may want to suspend the basking lamp off of the cage by a few inches too. They like to climb, and he/she can get severely burned by the bulb if it is resting on the screen. Good luck!!! So you are also getting on of Jann's little doll are you? What a great way to start, the forum for info and a strong healthy baby. I call that a real forum welcome.

Breeze has some great ideas for you and having raised a goodly number of baby veiled I will add a few ideas. But be real sure you do the plants as he suggested. I always start with a jungle of branches of lots of different sizes. I use small & medium bio vines, some nice electrical cord, like from a dead lamp, or just get a few feet at home depot. he will want to spend a lot of time at the top of his cage, so some intersecting branches and vines about 3 inches for the top in good. Look at the cage remember how small he will be and basically make sure he can get all over the cage with something to grip. A few fake vines will help fill in the gaps. You want he to be able to "hide" when he wants. The dripper is good just make sure it doesn't drip really fast. He will still require a good misting at the least twice a day. Do you have a therm/ hydrometer for the cage? I buy mine at walmart but about $15, they use a probe and have a digital led screen to let you know what is going on. I put the base part- where it shows #'s inside a zip shut sandwich bag. We don't want to talk about how many of those came to a violent death for my spray bottles.:eek: I killed lots before I finally started using sandwich bags.

I agree with what everyone has already said. Lot's of good advice! I would definately add more 'stuff' to fill out the top part of that cage. The plant in the second set of pics is a pothos. Pothos are great to use and easy to care for.

I can't wait for my little guy to arrive from Jann, too!! We should start a Luie and Camille Baby Club!! :p I'll try and post pictures of my setup before he arrives, too.

I'm very excited for the baby to come! I'm working on the enclosure later tonight and tomorrow. i have to go find some branches and disinfect them.

BTW, a club sounds like a great idea. we could post pics every week to show how the babies are progressing. :)

Tyler, You are off to a great start!!!! You have allot of good suggestion here to finish it off. You're little guy's getting bigger everyday and will be coming to live with you very soon so keep up the good work!

The pothos plant works great for them to drink off of.......holds water very well and helps keep up the humidity.

is what i named my new gyrly thats coming from Janns Luie&Chamellia; and i am jumpin over the moon for such excitment, got sum last minute items from home depot today, KnicKnak free roam area will be the bench u see, xcept it will be draped in screen to avoid my gurly becoming a meal for my boys!!!!!!! I also got another pothos and umbrella plant and a dracaena that i am replanting for my gyrly, it's going to be home sweet home around the 8th, and i agree we should start a fan club for the sires...:cool:

Thank you for the heads up about the plant! i wish i could use it though. no big, my current plants are growing up fast. they should work for now. :)

chams like to climb. You need more sticks and vines. The plants are nice and will grow to help fill the cage, but the baby will end up climbing on the screen instead of branches and sticks. A medium jungle vine would work well.
