Calcium

What is your guy’s take on what calcium should be used? My breeder told me to use Repashy Calcium Plus with every feeding. It also contains vitamin D3. But I’ve read in here not to use Calcium D3 with every feeding. He’s been doing great with it so far but I want to hear your guy’s opinions. Thanks:)

There are two supplements schedules that are frequently used.

1. Using Repashy Calcium Plus LoD (not the one you have) with every feeding.

2. Using a combo of calcium without D3, calcium with D3, and a multivtiamin. This video goes over the different benefits of each of these and how often to use them:

Thanks! So if I went with using the Repashy Calcium with LoD I would just only use that? And use it every single feeding?

I'm not sure the 'why' behind the issues. I think edemas have occurred.

I think @snitz427 has had some issues with it. I'll let them share their experiences.

I use the #2 technique myself.

Ok ? I just get worried when I hear that anyone has had problems with it. I freak out about everything involving my chameleon ?

That's understandable. I just don't know enough to feel confident speaking to it. I know plenty of keepers have used it without any issues as well.

I’m so sorry for bugging you. I just watched your video. It was very helpful:) Exactly what 3 supplement brands do you use or recommend?

Bug away! That's what we are here for :) Yay -- glad it was helpful.

These are what I use:
  • Rep-Cal without D3
  • Rep-Cal with D3
  • Reptivite without D3

I completely removed for Repashy LoD from the mix. I don’t have scientific study to back it up, but I’m convinced that it led to issues with my group.

I had one Chameleon who had Edema issues among other issues, another who had eye issues that could be related to vitamin A deficiencies, and the group has been acting strange overall this past winter. I do believe some of those issues may have been attributed to switching to LoD, but again, its a hunch not science.

I’ve since switched back to repcal and am doing the traditional calcium every feeding, alternating D3 and MV on weekends.

There are other keepers on the forums who had issues with LoD, particularly with females, which also assisted in making my decision to remove it.

Just an fyi: calcium plus, and calcium plus LoD have both been used successfully at every feeding by many keepers. Likewise, the alternative regime of pure calcium at every feeding + calcium with d3 twice a month + multivitamin twice a month, has also been used with success. The reason why both methods work is that supplementation is not an isolated variable in the husbandry equation. Uvb sources, gutloading regimes, cage setup and species all make a difference here. Couple regular calcium plus with a t8 5.0 and a panther chameleon in a 2x2x4, and you have a good chance of success. But change one variable in that formula, and things are different. In short, the question about which supplements to use depends on several factors, including, uvb source, gutloading practices, species etc.
