Can Chams Come with me?

Good luck

I used Petco boxes when I moved. We were only driving 30 miles... But this might work for you. I used bamboo cut to the length of the box and hot clued them about an inch from the bottom with about an inch space between the two sticks. This gives them a secure perch and aren't trying to balance as the car bumps along. The best place for these in the car would be by your feet or secured behind your seat. Maybe lay a blanket under them for padding and to dampen the cars vibrations and over them to keep out light. Watch the temp inside the car, maybe put a temp probe in one of the boxes so you can see they aren't over heating.

OK the transport problem is no big deal. Just this summer, when my cham was only 3-4 months old, I transported her for 4 (count em, 1-2-3-4) days of 16 hrs driving per day. Also brought her on a 5 hr ferry ride during that trip.

Here's what I was told by another member, and I used it and it worked great.

Just a simple shoe box, turned so that it's standing up tall. Stab lots of holes in it (enough to ventilate it but not enough to let all the light in). Then soak a small towel with room temperature water, and wring out the towel. Stuff that in there so that it's got like a perch on top, and (this is seriously the hardest part) convince your cham to go in there (it really takes some convincing). Then shut it. Now you just need to prop it in the car so that it isn't going to fall over / fall around. You may need to suddenly brake so do your best to make sure it won't move.

The cham will sleep in there the whole ride as long as it's dark and cool. Chams don't have a circadian clock like humans, they respond to light, which is why you should never see them sleeping during the day.

For 5 days (I spent a day in Ottawa) I was transporting my cham like this, sneaking her in and out of hotels, setting up her cage so she could be awake while I slept. She was fine. I'm sure one 12 hr drive will be OK. In fact, for 12 hrs you could drive during the day and just let the chams crawl around the backseat. Give them some stuff to climb on and they'll go exploring.

That being said, I also moved because of my military commitments. I know moving sucks, but don't be afraid to ask somebody to look after it. Afterall, in the military, we're all family. Does your husband outrank anybody? He could always get one of his subordinates to do it :D
