The lights in my room burned out about a week ago, and i want to get a grow light, and since my boys cage is in my room would it be ok to use it as a room light? would the plants still benefit from this?

yes, I replaced the ceiling lights in the cham room with 6500k 100w cfl's.

That is the best grow light to buy imo vs buying a light with "grow light" on the box. I think a 2 pack of the lights was around 8.00 @ lowes

good call, generally, im not a big fan of cfl's (whether uvb or not), but in an application like that (distances greater than 4'), i see no problem with it.

as for the op, define grow light? imo, i would avoid any sort of metal halide, high pressure sodium, mercury vapor etc. by grow light, if you mean a linear 6000+k fluorescent, or a cfl (@ 3+') then i see no prob with it, but just to be clear, a grow light does not usually substitute for uvb. imo, a decent grow light should be 6000 k or greater. jmo.
