hi all
Need here

I recently purchased a panther chameleon
The breeder told me he is a 4.5/5 month old male ambilobi fire red

Though I have suspicions that it is acually a female

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi! A couple of easy ways to tell is you have a male vs a female panther cham would be color. By this cham's color, it looks like shes a female. Another way to tell, is if they have a bulge at the base of their tail right behind their vent, they could be a male. If they don't, theyre probably a female. This is from my knowledge from my cham, but there might be other ways to tell too. From my judgement though, it looks like your cham might be a female. Also, their color do change when they sleep.

Thanks for your reply ,during the day i do see some green hues with darker striping but I am leaning more towards a female my self which would be a shame as I paid quite a bit more for a male

of course! yeahhh. that suckssss. do you happen to have any pictures of your chameleon from during the day?

Here’s a screen shot from a video that was sent to me before I got him/her
I’ll take a lot more clearer ones once I get home from work

I did contact the breeder and he’s quit happy to swap over for another male he has if it dose turn out that I have a female though I’m a little attached to him/her now lol

So there’s a possibility I might end up with two

I think I might be seeing a hemipenal bulge but can’t be sure as the pics are too blurry. Need a clear pic with the tail out straight to better determine.

Thank for the reply’s

I’m not seeing a specific bulge, but that is a good thick tail base so I‘ll say you have a boy. I do have to be honest though - I am terrible at sexing panthers and it’s best to see what others say.

Here's my YBBB Ambilobe at around the four month mark. Mostly green and some black but when he first arrived (I think three months), he was mostly just a tan color.

Has your babe shed yet? Males subadults will show more vibrant color after full body shed. If I had to guess, I'd just say give it some time and he will reveal himself gradually.

From what i remember from my panther cham when he was 4 months who is a male, he was bright in color. Females are known to have more muted colors. Also, no bulge at their tail. I got my cham at 4 or 5 months, and he had bright colors. I would assume if your cham was a male, she/he would've developed their bright colors already. It is soooo easy to get attached to your cham i definitely agree😭.

I agree with MissSkittles, the base of the tail does seem pretty thick and I think I see faint green throughout the body. I think only time will tell. Chameleons mature at their own rate just like everything else. I’ve seen super mature looking 4 month olds and some that look like hatchlings and you can’t tell if it’s male or female and they take forever to developed color. My first panther chameleon I got at 3 months old and he didn’t develop any real color till he was about 6ish months. I kept thinking that maybe he was a female.

I heard somewhere on one of these Chameleon you tube sites that a male panther chameleon has a spur on his back feet and a female does not... My Ambilobe was purchased from CB Reptile and is 6.5 months old and I am Sure she is Female and does not have the spur on her hind legs. Any knowledge of this sexing Style is appreciated.

if you are concerned about your cham's sex and are leaning towards female, I would make sure that you have a laying bin set up just in case, but depending on locale, I also think you might have a female!
