I used 'HP Image Zone', it's basic software that came with my computer, you can download it for free from the HP site, although I'm not sure if it would work with a non-HP computer.
This was the 'Solarize' function, under the 'Special Effects' tab. It's weird because it only really had this brilliant effect for this one picture, I've tried using it with other pics of him and it's not nearly as dramatic.
