Candles and Reptiles?

Recently after starting a thread on a separate forum, because my crested gecko kept sneezing, I found out that candles are actually pretty nasty.

I was wondering if anyone has a thread about this, because if candles are truly nasty, I know quite a few people who need to know, myself included (but since the crested incident I have ceased using candles anywhere near my pets).

I'll quote:
Oh yeah, and scented candles are actually very toxic and shouldn't be burned around critters, in my opinion. Basically, you're breathing in oils that scent the air, and inhaling oil is not necessarily a good thing!! Also, many are cheaply made and as the wicks burn, they can release zinc and other heavy metals into the air. More bad stuff that nobody really needs to be breathing in!
If you just gotta burn something, go with all natural beeswax with all cotton wicks.

Has anyone studied the effects of candles in use with chameleons?

hmmm, weird?! I "ALWAYS" burn candles!!!! mmm smell sooo goood! :) Anyways..when I had my chams which I had 8 of them! They never had any issues?! Your gecko is really "SNEEZING"?!

More or less, yes! It sounded like when you exhale out of your nose really fast, and then right afterward he yawned - which is adorable! You should see it. :)

everything but water and air is bad for you

wait,

water and air can be bad for you too!

so i guess everything is bad for you except cheese.

cheese is always good :)

Hahaha Mepokeu.

Syn, crested geckos 'sneezing' is somewhat normal, it's almost like a wheezing sound when you have a booger in your nose lol. Mine do it too and there's nothing smoky in my room.

Soy and Palm wax candles are apparently safe and environmentally friendly. A lot of candles have a lot of synthetic materials and chemicals in them, and even buying organic makes a difference because many of the crops that the wax is yielded from are sprayed with pesticides.

Of course, this totally depends how often you use candles, I'm sure in small doses any candles would be safe.

I melt them, I get Scensty from a forum member, and they smell good. I only melt them about 30 minutes a day because they tend to fill the whole room quickly.

I didn't know you had cresteds, btw! :p

Will probably look into a Soy or Palm wax candle if it helps get rid of the moss smell LOL!

the move to new style candles ie tarts, wick less candles , and no burn candles is for a reason. fire burning anything produces bad gas. just think about whats in that candle , and now think in order to smell it you have to breath it in. if its heavy elements then those dont always exit your lungs very well, and though we may not know about it yet some simple things in candles may actually cause lung problems, but next time you go to the MD ask him/her they will be more than happy to explain the cons of them =)

lets not forget pizza...it's like sex, even a bad pizza is always good.

Well now I am confused!

Whats worse for the animals, the flatulence, or the candles I burn to hide the flatulence?!?!?

I also agree with the Cheese... Whens the last time you saw a high speed persuit on the news involving cheese!

They had a lit candle on their kitchen counter..and he jumped up there and stood next to the candle..and he caught fire! :( but it just burnt his fur which is good!!! They got to him just in time! :) now they dont burn candles..

Pray tell, how does a fluffy cat catch fire?

People would be surprised how often this happens.
