You can also help keep the humidity up by keeping other plants around the outside of his cage. it will help provide cover for him so he can't see you walking by and keep up the hmidity. A humidifier works wonders for dry places. The main reason for a screen cage is to keep fresh air flowing. They need humidity but they also need fresh air to dry the cage. If you have a dripper going all day for him to drink and you mist a couple of times a day you will keep the humidity fairly decent if you also have live plants in his cage. Like others have said, read Brad Ramsey's page.
He is a Veiled, not a Pather or Parsons.
Humidity isnt all that important.
30-40% ambient should be plenty.
I'm not sure what Canada humidity is like, but I'm sure there is a little up there.
The addition of some live plants, a dripper, or humidifier will raise humidity.
A spike of 50-70 percent during a misting session should be enough.
Veileds his size and age dont shed very fast anyways, and trust me I have tried everything to make it go faster.
I have kept chameleons in glass cages with screen lids or in glass cages that have screen lids and fronts for years. My C. chameleons all lived in these (for all 6 years of their lives) as well as veileds, panthers, fischer's, etc.
Managing water issues with glass cages takes some practice/caution...but I have never had an issue with it. I have never had a chameleon with a respiratory infection (except for one that came to me that way)...and I have taken most of the ones that died in for autopsies, so they would have shown up. I have not had any that are bothered by their reflection. I do not feel that there is an airflow problem when the lights are positioned to one side of the cage properly. It works on the same theory as those old convection boxes used in high school experiments that show air flow.
I doubt if I would ever use a cage that was all screen....just don't like them.
Mind you, I have no problem with anyone who wants to use an all screen cage....and I definitely understand that if you live in California or Florida and not in Canada (like I do), you would need to use one. IMHO, you have to do what works for you and the chameleon. There is no one answer...depends on where you live and how you do it.
Kinyonga, your cages are rather long are they not? I just want to clarify about air movement in a cage, as the dimentions and orientation of the screen top will affect how the heat from the light circulates ari within the cage.
Thanks for the reptisun 5.0 advice to all those that gave it. I changed lights and the effect on my chams disposition is incredible. Increase in appetite and personality was pronounced. Thanks again!
