Caught eating dirt

I've read there are two schools of thought. One is that if they are eating dirt, it must be to make up for a mineral or nutritional imbalance somewhere else. The other is that it is somewhat natural for the occasional dirt snack (not to be confused with dirt nap). Regardless of which is correct, chameleons do have access to soil in the wild, so its most important to ensure it's free of chemicals, fertilizers, and additives. James had a good idea to sift the dirt... as even the organic stuff can have choking/impaction hazards in it.

I replanted all of mine with organic soil and added a bunch of large river rocks to try to keep my male from eating it. The turd still finds dirt on occasion! If I see him eating dirt I try to give him a bug as my guess is he is hungry. He's an adorable climbing bottomless pit.
