Cham behavior

hey I wasn't sure what forum to post this to. Anyways, my male panther has been coming down off this 3 ft ficus tree I have. I've never had a problem with him up in his little free range tree. so the other day I put him up there and left the room for a few mins and came back and he was wandering around on the floor :p Then the other day I did the same thing and found him hanging comfortably on a light cord going to his cage.

Today I took him outside on the ficus tree and he kept going down. He would then go on my hand and try to crawl around on me. I put him back up in his little tree and same thing again. we played that game for about 10-15 mins and I put him back in his cage.

I remember my Jacksons chameleon doing that years ago when I had him.

Is this just chameleon mischief? or could something be wrong or something he not like? He is healthy, colors were great no sign of stress.

any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

Here are a couple of thoughts, although you may have already considered these:

- I see you have a female Panther also. Any chance she is receptive right now and/or can your male see her?

- My male Panther sometimes does this when he is about to shed. He get's agitated and starts doing all kinds of strange active behavior.

- What are your ambient temperatures in his room? With the temperatures rising outside/inside, I have noticed my male doing this when the ambient temperature of the room he is in starts getting above ~80F. Seems to be saying, "Hey, you may want to consider turning on the Air Conditioner. In the meantime I am going to just hang out down here." :D

Hopefully, he is just being quirky right now.

hey thanks for the reply. I do have a female but he cannot see her. there is a burgundy sheet inbetween their cages. Also he doesn't do this so much when he is in the cage, its when I let him out to "free roam" on this ficus tree I found at wallyworld.

He didn't seem to agitated today, but your right as in I cant tell if there is a shed about to happen.

My honest guess would be that when he is out of his cage he wants to explore? But im not sure if that's typical behavior of chameleons as when my female is in the Ficus tree she seems very content and never goes down to the bottom of the tree, nor gets off it to explore.

My cage temps are within limits. about 77-83 ish. humidty goes from 37-70 percent depending on misting spikes and such.

I see chameleons in pictures climbing on weird things such as hangers for curtains or power cords that are hanging, im just wondering if he might be exploring.

not sure if I mentioned either he is about 6-7 months old. Maybe that juvenile behavior makes them want to explore more when out of the cage?

thanks again for you input.

Thats interesting, my panthers and veileds always stay up high and never roam down to floor level.
Jax are a different story, they go everywhere, and dont mind running around at floor level.
That means I have to supervise my jax when he is out of him cage.

But my veileds I know I can keep them out all day with no worries. They will never wander down to the floor and will always stay on the free range, up high.

So, I dont know why your panther is doing that

Sounds normal to me, I have a panther that free ranges and when he feels like he's done he'll climb down off the free range and climb around on the floor and get into some mischief.
