Chameleon at top of enclosure

Hi there,

just a bit curious about my chameleon's behaviour in the last two days and want to make sure that there is nothing to worry about.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - plyboard on 3 sides, glass front (UK resident!) One of the glass doors is about to changed to screen.
Lighting - 5.0 UVB tube light, at back of cage. Basking light towards the front.
Temperature - temps measured with digital thermometer. 30C under basking, 22C in rest of cage, goes down to about 18C at night.
Humidity - measured using digital thing (as above, does all) between 60 and 75%
Plants - One large ficus which fills about 50% of the cage. Large wood structures in middle of cage, spreading out, quite a few vines.
Location - In the corner of the living room, relatively low traffic, top of cage is about 6ft from floor.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Male veiled, about 12 weeks old, had him about 4 weeks
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? Very rarely, maybe twice since we've had him. Started hand feeding two days ago.
Feeding - Fed crickets (eats about 15-20 a day), also had a few waxworms recently. Crickets are fed on bug grub, veg such as broccoli, lettuce, green beans, fruit such as apples and pears (always a mix for them), plus bee pollen and cricket diet with vitamins. Have water gel stuff in there for hydration. Waxworms fed on bee pollen.
Supplements - Dusted with Calypso calcium dust daily, nutrobal twice a month.
Watering - mist him a minimum of three times a day, for about 3-4 mins. Have only seen him drinking a few times. Humidity is between 60-75%
Fecal Description - poo normal looking. Black with white coating. Not been tested for parasites.
History - Has shed twice in the last 4 weeks.
Current Problem - Not sure if it is a problem as such, but normally hugo spends the days sitting under his basking lamp, and the nights sleeping in his ficus, usually about half way up th eplant. The last couple of days he has been sitting on the thermometer wire, which is coiled up on the roof of the cage. He comes down to bask and eat later, and then goes back up, and has sometimes been sleeping there. Sometimes he also sits with his mouth open, even when the temp registers 28C. There is no wheezing or popping. Any ideas what this could be? Should i be worried he goes there?

Thanks,

Emma

No sleeping, just sits there and watches the world go by. Comes down to his food bowl, literally hangs over the top of it and picks off the crickets (seems to be the favoured way of hunting at the moment). Might sit in the basking light for a bit and then goes back. yesterday spent the day on his vines under the basking light and the slept halfway up the ficus, but today is sitting up on the wire again.

As in the first post, 12 weeks old, male veiled, basking temp 30C (occasionally goes down to 28C), main tank temp 24C. The occasional gaping has been when he is on the thermometer wire, and i checked the temp (as thought it was that) and it was 30 the first time i saw it, and 28.4 the second time. You turn it any lower he starts to go a slightly darker green.

Correct me if I am wrong anyone...but a 3 month old cham does not require a heat light if the temps in the house are good enough correct?

They start to need one around 5-6months?

Although we have a warm house, it doesn't regularly reach 30 degrees C during the day. The house is usually kept around 20 (which is about the temp of the lowest area of the viv).

The breeder we got him from had a heatlamp. Please let us know if we are doing wrong but it's not something we've heard before.

Everything you are doing seems fine, don't worry about that. Maybe once the glass door has been changed out this will change.

For now, maybe move the heat light a bit further away from the cage to see if this stops so not as much heat is getting in.

As for gutloading your crix, do not give them broccoli, same goes for spinach, there is something in it that prevents your cham from absorbing the calcium.

I am wondering if it is just him exploring his territory a bit more. He was up there for about 30 mins, and has now gone down to the branch in the middle of the ficus that he sleeps on. Strange. Will keep an eye on it and move the lights slightly as suggested. Haven't given the crickets broccoli for a few weeks, so will make sure I don't use it again.

Hi.

Dont know if this will help, but i have a 9 week old cham & i read in brads blog - how to raise kitty the chameleon, that baby chams basking spot should be around 80 - 85.

I keep montys on around this temp, & the light dims on & off all day - he sometimes sits right at the top of his cadge too

godd luck

We try to keep the temp at around 30C, as the breeder we got him from said thats what he kept them at, and also if we go lower, he goes dark. We have only seen him gaping a handful of times (if the basking light goes over 31C) and it has been reduced immediately. He has gaped twice whilst at the top of the cage, and both times the temps were at 28C. He just sits there and watches the room. And like i said, its not all the time, just occasionally. Last night he slept in the middle of the ficus.

Update

Spoken to the breeder we got Hugo from who said that just as they are getting ready to shed (which he was) chams will sometimes gape a little to break the skin at the angle of the jaw (is this right?). Also said that he was using the coil as an extra branch and that his behaviour is perectly normal, and his temps are fine.
