Chameleon Care Ethics

Hello everyone. So tonight I was in petco to get some crickets for my chams and I was in the reptile section just to see what they had. And what hit me hard was this big, beautiful Panther Chameleon, I believe Nosy Be (not so good with panthers) was in a cage, and under the cage it said that this guy was abandoned outside the store in the cold and was recuperating :eek: :( :mad:. And I thought to myself that only a terrible person would leave this beautiful chameleon alone, in front of a store. This chameleon looked like he was just in bad shape, I just couldn't think of pain this guy must have been in, the owner could have atleast brought him inside the store and see if they would take him. Anyways, I just posted this thread so people would understand the pain that some animals go through because their owners don't take good care of them.
 
What makes this even worse is that he will probably not get the care it will require to make him well there :(
 
thats horrific..... what a shame.. that person could have done so many things differently, these days there are a TON of reptile rescue centers that take in animals that cannot be taken care of. even in my tiny little town there is a woman running a rescue out of her home. hearing about these things make me sad, i dont understand why people would get an animal and then abandon it like that.. at least petco is trying to do what they can, i dont normally like these large corporation pet stores but it is good that they are doing what they can for that poor cham

I was thinking that too, at least put info on a website or something for sale, maybe even this one! i'm also glad that petco was helping too. from what I saw he was being well fed, in his cage was a bowl of meal worms, and i saw a few crickets running around, it was pretty planted, and there was a thermometer and humidity gauge in the tank and it looked relatively fine, the only thing that looked wrong was the poor chameleon. he had really bright color but looked just kinda worn out, he could barely keep his eyes open but when they were open he never moved them.... people can just be..... awful! :mad:

and that is the absolutely nicest way to put it......
i hope that little guy makes a recovery who knows how long he was out there, what conditions he came from, and how cold it was out there. i would certainly like to know if he does make it.

i'm going out of town this week for winter break qbut will try to check next weekend, but most likely the weekend after, and will tell you guys how he is doing. i might even go in again tomorrow and see when they found him and ask if hes been recovering, i might even get a pic
 
thanks for keeping us updated, i hope he pulls thru. reading stories like this always make me wanna bring these poor guys home.. thats how i ended up with my first cham, went to the local pet store to get mice for my snakes and saw this little veiled male in a hprrific aquarium, filled with feces, wayyyyy too hot, no dripper, a bubbler, bark, no vines or foliage, bunch of shriveled up bugs and decided i had to bring him home. i did a bunch of research and got all the supplies and brought him home. got a hold of the local reptile rescue woman to come check him out because we have no local reptile vets. she had worked with the petstore for awhile trying to help them with their reptiles but they really dont care and dont do what they should for them so all her work did nothing. she told me she knew they got him from a crappy breeder who inbreeds and he may end up having issues because of that. she said my set up was perfect and was glad he had gone to a good home. she came by multiple times to check him over and he slowly started developing problems with his eyes. i intially thought it was a RI but he had no other symptoms and she scratched that off the list. she had recently took in another cham gotten from the same petstore and the same breeder who had delevoped tumors because of inbreeding and had the same symptoms. before i was able to get him to a vet appointment, i went to turn his lights on in the morning and found him dead.... long story short, i hate when crappy breeders/ owners cause the death of animals. its sad and it sucks :(
 
im sorry for the sad demise of your baby...... people just dont think of animals as humans... I am not the animal enthusiast that is vegan or anything... but no one will leave a baby in the cold, but they would leave cats, dogs, and here a chameleon....... it just sucks a lot because people think that animals dont feel as humans do........ Anyways..... i hope he will get better ... thanks for your support ReptileLove18!

People make me sick :(
I wish that I was rich so I could take care of all the abandoned animals I hear about...and all the sick ones and injured ones...I hope that baby makes it....

thanks.. at least he had a good home for a little while! i dont understand people, animals have feelings just like people do! i hope he gets better too, keep us updated and have a great vacation!! :)
 
my god! that is just... Wow!
so actually right now i am going to Target to get some clothes, but Petco is like one minute away so ill stop, take a picture and post it in like 10 or 20 minutes
 
Wow thats awful.. That is a good reason as to why I hate people, hope all goes well on your end and that chameleon can get a good life with whoever gets it.
 
i actually want him/her very much but i need to get another cage... i have a small one but that cant be permanent... also i dont know how much they will charge but he is very beautiful... he, i would say, would charge now, if he was in great condition, for about $300 - $400, but if he does die, i dont want to have lost that much to a dead animal....... maybe i can get him for free or maybe under $100 maybe they want to get it off their hands......
 
you could try talking to them and saying that, letting them know you have cham experience and want to get this animal the care it needs to survive :)
 
ill try, this place knows who i am very well so maybe if i talk them into it..... im going to go now so in about 20 or 30 mins ill tell u guys what happended.. i may even bring this guy home:D:D
 
im back! sadly i didnt bring him home:( but they said they were gonna have the local reptile vet take a look at her, thy also said itt was a female.... sadly.. i learned more about her story, the people left her outside the store in a plain old paper sack!
