chameleon or no chameleon

Chameleons all the way!

I have just about everything from Geckos to Tree frogs and love my Chameleons. They are my favorite out of all my pets. Go for it but understand they are a commitment. I have most of my cages automated with misters, timed lighting etc. but still need to work with him in the mornings and evenings. I like to hand feed them so they get used to me as their meal ticket :) Good luck if you decide to do it! I am getting another one tonight.

I've read Chams are difficult to take care of, I've had my Charlie since 5/10/10 and have enjoyed every minute of it. :D . I guess it depends on what you consider difficult?

My pets oldest to youngest:
1 dachshund -Patches 21 years old!
1 Calico Cat- Chu-Chu stray 16 years old
4 Fire belly toads- Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson ages 1-2 yrs old
1 Yemen Chameleon-Charlie-( AKA "The little boy") 5 months old

Do your research, make sure he/she is healthy, just like you would for any pet. You know all animals that we take into our lives have pros and cons. I've had my Charlie since May 10, and it was love at first sight!. You will develop a routine that will make it work. First thing I do in the am is turn his lights on, he wants a drink so i spray him with warm water , turn humidifer on feed him. I spend more time on the weekends , cleaning out his cage, getting him out of the cage for "exercise" or out in the sun . He likes to hang in my windows. I can hand feed him now and he is actually now eating some vegetables and fruit! ( occasional baby food-apple, squash and greens).

It has got to the point that when he sees me he, and if i hold my hand out, sometimes he crawls up my arm to come out, sometimes not, he doesnt want to be bothered, kind of reminds me of a cat lol. I do this less during the week because of work but I go home for lunch every day to mist his cage and take him out of cage after work for spot cleaning. I know they don't like to be "handled"( I dont either! ) So he calls the shots. Ive learned so much by reading and watching him. He and all my pets have no idea how much they add to my life, so i give them the best life possible., get a chameleon ! you wont regret it. Some people like watching fish tanks, I like watching my Charlie!

Its all in the preparation and learning you do before diving in. If you have the correct setup, provide the right nutrition, lighting, supplements, etc., and understand what a cham can and cannot tolerate, you'll do OK. And, scoping out an experienced vet before you need it (things happen)!

What am I missing

I agree 100% with Thompson but on the other hand we all were first time cham owners. Make sure you buy a healthy cham from a breeder here on the forum. Starting with a healthy cham is one way to avoid problems the other is to not skimp on their husbandry requirements. You have spend any where from 2-3 hrs a day, everyday.

Most of my system is automated, but even if it wasn't I would only spend maybe 30-40 minutes max unless I take her outside for some sun. Now I do a complete clean-up of the enclosure every month which takes a wile, but what do you do that it takes 2-3 hours a day in husbandry. could you please itemise. I'm truly not trying to be sarcastic I would just like to know what I'm not doing for my girl because clearly I'm missing something.:(
