Chameleon respiratory infection

I am pretty sure my male chameleon 5 months old has a respiratory infection. I have had him in my care for three weeks. I will be calling my vet first thing tomorrow. He is showing signs, but is still eating and active. My question is do I change anything to help him before the vet.

Misting is twice a day 7am and 7pm, fogging is 30 minute cycles from 10:30 to 6:30 nightly.

Night humidity and temps run between 85-99% and temps are about 66. Days are 40-50% humidity and 80-85 temp. When temp is over 85 I will turn off heat lamp. Highest it has been is 88.

Willing to send pictures and take any advice before seeing a vet tomorrow.

Hi! Sorry to hear your little guy isn’t feeling well. The best way to get help on health related questions and any needed updates is by answering the questions below.

I, myself, am certainly not qualified to help with medical questions, but there are a ton of really knowledgeable people on here. I wish you and your cham the best of luck!

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
  • Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Please Note:
  1. The more details you provide the better and more accurate help you will receive.
  2. Photos can be very helpful.

Thank you for responding. I have personally discussed this with Steve H from The Chameleon Enthuasists Facebook page and a member here. We have worked out my next steps, my concerns and made some adjustments. I will be contacting and seeing a vet tomorrow.

I will work on filling out the above information to have at all times for future post.

All is well ftom the vet visit. I guess I am going to be known as the helicopter chameleon mom. But my vet did say that there is nothing wrong with being vigilant.

In addition, a fecal test is being done.

Oh and my baby boy is weighing in nicely at 30 grams the vet said.
So glad to hear that!! I did the exact same thing when I first got my little girl. It turns out she was just looking up to try to get to her dripper. 😂 But I’m glad I did because we learned that her urtic acid was a bit high and can compensate for that. Hoping the results from the fecal are all normal!
