Chameleon Weights

Chris Anderson

Dr. House of Chameleons
Hi everyone,

I think it would be very useful to get together a large data pool of weights for different chameleon species. What I picture is being able to put all the data for a particular species into a graph that shows the weight trend for males and females of that species relative to their body length. Theres obviously going to be variation around such a trend but with a large enough data pool for a particular species, you can get a fairly good idea of what a good average weight at a particular size would be.

If everyone who has the ability to get weight data for their chameleons could post the information, maybe I could try to put it together into a useful format of some sort. I also am planning on posting a similar request on the E-Zine as soon as I finish getting another issue together so hopefully I can get together a pretty good amount of information.

If this is going to work without it being too difficult, I think it would be best not to make this thread chatty about what people may think about the idea but rather if you could just reply with the following information for each individual animal, it should be pretty easy to put all the information together over time:

Species:
Locale (if applicable):
Sex:
Snout to Vent Length:
Weight (in grams):
Additional Comments (ie gravid, just laid eggs, etc.):

I guess we'll see what happens. Fingers crossed!

Chris

Chris,

I have several Veiled chameleons, which you most likely already know, but would you like some information on them?
I know they are a very commonly kept species, and I could offer some good information if you would like it.
I have several graphs at home of age/weight/length
Pre gravid/ post gravid
etc etc

*edit* no hard feelings if you don't need it. :p

Justin,

To be honest, I think this will work best for veileds and panthers where enough people have them that we can get together a lot of data. I'd like data from any and all species but I think we'll be able to get the best result with veileds and panthers. If you have more detailed weight information over time, feel free to send it to me cause it would definitely be useful.

Chris

I think age of the chameleon is a crucial factor in this pool as well. I'll include an age and weight report tomorrow for my chams.

Weight really isn't dictated by age as far as establishing an index of standard weight condition. Age is just a loose proxy to the animal's size. For something like an index of appropriate weight, you need to look more at the size of the animal, particularly the body length. Since animals grow at different rates depending on a number of factors, age is a misleading factor that does not account for variations in growth rates or body size based on genetic or environmental factors. While old animals will be leaner then a younger adult of the same length, as long as the individual is healthy, its weight should still be in an acceptable range.

Thanks for the weights everyone. Keep them coming!

Chris

I think you mean 18" total length. I'm looking for snout to vent length (without the tail). Its a more accurate measure of an animal's size. Can you get the length without the tail so I can include your cham's data in the pool?

Chris

Hi Chris,
OOPS!! Wasn't thinking!! Can you imagine a Veiled that huge!!

Sky is only 8 inches(S/V). Yes, 18 inches was his total length, not S/V length

I am concerned about my boy and was looking for exactly these numbers...I am very glad to have found this thread...

Species: Male (I am pretty sure) BB Ambilobe
SVL: 2.5"
Age: based on what I was told when I got him, he should be approaching/just under 5 (FIVE) months old
Weight: 9.5grams!! Yes, only 9.5grams...he is tiny!

Hopefully you guys can help me out here...
1) IF he is 5 months old, roughly how much should he weigh and what should his svl be?

2) Based on his svl of 2.5" and weight of 9.5grams, what age would you guesstimate him to be? I have had him in my possession for roughly 1.5 months.

You just posted on a thread from 2008. You should consider starting your own thread in the health forum. Good Luck
