Chameleons and Renting?

I have a question for those who have chameleons and rent their houses. Do land lords care about chameleons being there or do you think they're mostly worried about cats and dogs. We rent right now but this house is too small and I was hoping to move into something bigger (I need more room for more chams lol) when our lease is up. Just didn't know what kind of trouble I would be facing.

I don't have experience renting myself, but I BELIEVE that most landlords don't care about fish. Just try to play it off like that: An animal that lives in an escape proof cage that would die if it got out (outside, lol.) and can't destroy any property.

I do! The letting agent wants to inspect the place few weeks ago because the light and the plant, visible from the window looked suspicious!;)
Even thoug pets are not allowed she was totally fine knowing we have a chameleon.

pets are not aloud where i rent either but mt landlord acctualy thinks my chams are so beautiful they are not a threat at all she has no problem. Fish she does not want because of the possible water damages they could cause and mold issues.

Military housing is a big no-no towards reptiles and exotic pets (ferrets and such). Which sucks because I want to take my chams outside and cant. If I do I'll get evicted.

Rent a lot and have done both things, admitting to it upfront and keeping it a secret until they may come to the apartment and see them themselves. In both situations no one has cared. When I was admitting it I took a photo of one of them on my hand with me to the leasing offices and brought it up when I brought up my dog. All of them saw that they were small and would live in a cage so they said they didn't care. Didn't charge me anything extra for having them or anything.

And recently we had an appliance inspection where they came up to the place and saw the cham room. They loved it, and I still have the maintenance people tell me they love my place when I run into them around the property.

So no, you shouldn't have any problems :)
Oh, I have rented in 6 places over the last 5 years. Both houses and apartments.

every situation is different. you have to ask each property owner what they will and will not permit. If you are a "good renter" and have references and a credit check to prove you pay your rent and take care of a place, and if you explain that chameleons are small, silent, caged and not dangerous - you should find something.

When I was a landlord I required a pet deposit, in addition to the normal damange deposit. I was far more likely to accept a lizard than a dog - lizards arent noisy and rarely cause damage.

If I caught someone with a pet they had not talked to me about and got my permission for in advance, I evicted them - even if it was a pet i would have had no problem with if they had asked. I dont like liars; I wanted honest people I could trust.

I rent now, and my landlords don't care at all. I was upfront with them, and made sure they were aware that it was not a komodo dragon (first thing that came to their minds when I said 'lizard'). Just tell them they don't stink, make noise, or have to leave their enclosure. They usually just don't want snakes, dogs, or cats.

from what i know up here in a canada a landlord cannot tell you than you cannont have pets or smoke, once you rent a house you are allowed to live it as if you owned it. appartment building can be a different story.

here is the law. in ontario at least

A6: Only if the pet is dangerous, causes allergic reactions or causes problems for other tenants or the landlord, must you get rid of your pet or consider moving elsewhere as per Landlord application to terminate tenancy based on animals.

Even if you signed a lease with a "no pets" clause, if the pet is not a problem for anybody they can not enforce it; such no pets clauses are invalid under the law.

You do not have to move or get rid of the pet unless the Board issues a written order to do so.

I assure you this is not the case everywhere in Canada. In BC I absolutely have the right under the Tenency Act to say "no pets" or "no smokers" the only thing I cannot say is "no kids" unless the entire building is designated "over 40 only" - and if you have a pet (or smoke) without permission, the landlord absolutly can give you notice (you either get rid of the pet, or you leave the place)

even if you live in crazy ontario, It is always best to be ETHICAL and be upfront and honest about your situation

My landlord does not care about the chameleon itself. It's the bugs they had a problem with. However, I managed to convince them that crickets are a non-infesting species and showed them my cricket containers so they were all right with it in the end.

my dad is my landlord (he owns the property)... I told him i got a new chameleon species that only eats veggies, cause i wont hear the end about the crickets, i also keep the crickets in the bathroom so it muffles the noise. Even if its the law, the landlords can still give you crap about it.

I didn't tell my landlords up front. They've visited my place and seen my chams and were fascinated by them, especially when Oscar snaps a bug for them. They've even told me they would have said no if I had asked since they didn't know what they were or how contained they would be. But after seeing them they've assured me it's fine to have them since they are caged and don't smell or make messes. I also have dogs and cats so have already paid the pet deposit anyway. I'm also a stellar tenant and keep everything in great condition without complaining so that helps. That's several landlords who have been good about it, but everyone is different. Good thing sandracham wasn't my landlord. ;)

Honestly asking for a chameleon was my attempt at making a cat a better sounding option. JK. We asked for a cat he said absolutely no. We asked for a chameleon and he thought it was the coolest thing in the world and frequently asks how he's doing. Some landlords will appreciate a chameleon and all its glory.
