Chams and orchids

Are Orchids poisonous at all for chams? I grow orchids as another hobby, and some of them require the same conditions my cham does. I thought it might be cool to put one of my plants in his cage to grow, but I don't want to unless I know that they will both be safe.
Thanks for any replies!

I have heard of people doing it before but I am not sure if it is very safe. You should post some pics of your orchids. They are so pretty.:D

orchids

I have been using orchids among other plants for over 10 years. I am not sure of the name, but they have long stalks which are great for climbing. The leaves allow for great water collection. These types of orchids can grow to 4 feet. They are very hardy and have never had them die on me. I wil;l say, that I use the orchid plants strictly for my outside cages.
Pictured is a young plant I found online.

That's a dendrobium you have pictured there, and I once spoke with someone who had an 6ft tall one. They are awesome plants. Thanks for the links!!!

how do you grow orchids, ive never seen pollen or seeds from them, just curious...do they use vegetative reproduction, if so im clipping mine right now! lol

You can grow them from seeds, but it's extremely hard. You have to have sterilized flaskes and it takes years. There is a vegetative way, but you can't just cut off a piece and grow it. A keiki is when a plant produces it's own little baby. I've never had one before, but I haven't been growing that long.

well pothos produce vegetatively and you can just clip them, guess its not the same, mine had a couple keiki's from what i understand, i can just repot those?

spider plants can do it to when they have those little spider looking things at the ends, you can just cut them off and plant them. that is how i got mine.

I grow a fair share of orchids. The are similar in care techniques for chameleons as brighteyez mentioned. As for raising them from seed or babies, that's quite a chore and isn't worth the bother for most people (sometimes the orchid will produce a small baby from their bloom now and then - but most people cut off the bloom stalk way too soon to let this occur). You can pick up hearty varieties at home improvement or nursery stores. Even Costco has some decent ones now and then. Like LanceCham said, they are nice for chameleons to climb on and do offer nice water collection (their leaves funnel the water towards their roots). I think a blooming orchid and a chameleon are a GREAT mix!!! :D

Yes, I agree that orchids and chams in the same cage are a beatuful sight. However, my veileds don't think so and will often eat the flowers of the orchids.

You can repot them, but you have to wait until there are enough healthy roots growing from them. I've never had a keiki, so I'm not the best person to ask about them, but there is a forum where you can find some great information and people who can give you advice. It's orchidboard.com, check it out.
