Chick Feed for Crickets - Medicated

Well, I grabbed the wrong sack at the feed store and ended up with the "medicated" version of Purina Start n Grow.

Here's what it has in it:

Amprolium .0125%

Aids in Developing Active Immunity to Coccidiosis
Medication that helps protect young birds against this common disease until their immune systems mature.

Does that sound like a problem to anyone? I've only fed the crickets on this for two days.

I work for Purina as a sales rep, and if you asked for one and they gave you another, you should be able to take it back. Typically they bag down the medicated stuff to sell in smaller amounts anyways. Go back and speak with the person on staff and tell them what happened, and they should be able to help you out...provided it was there honest mistake there is usually no problem. Stephanie

Hi my question to you is what are you trying to accomplish. There are so many other good cricket gutloads out there that are beneficial to your chams. Its it to my knowledge from reading on chick feed that te food includes some kind of hormone or steroid in the food. This will have no outward affects until you breed these animals and see what you get. I dont have the time right know to get into this extensive but I dont recommend feeding those crickets off. Have a great day and hopefully you heed the warning. :)

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the advice. I didn't notice it until I had dumped it all into an airtight storage container and was throwing the bag away. It's only $8 for 25#, so it's no big deal to replace it.

Ironically enough, Google "coccidiosis chameleons" and there are quite a few hits.

CBD: As for not feeding those crickets off, the most amprolium that food could've possibly contained was .05 of an ounce by weight since I've put about four ounces total into their enclosure (if that much). Divide five hundredths of an ounce by 800 crickets and their absorption rate of it and I doubt that's very significant metabolically speaking once it gets to the chameleon.

Do you have any actual evidence that Purina is putting illegal hormones and steroids into Start n Grow? That seems to be the gist of your point since no mention of the medication was made. The only concerns you expressed was over the non-existent hormones and steroids.

Do you have any real data to back it up?

I'm going to get a bag of the non-medicated variety and give this stuff away, anyway.

BTW, this wasn't for the gut load diet. This is part of the normal maintenance food.

Hey Jason,
I really didnt want to post on this in the first place cause I didnt want any conflict. I saw with my own two eyes deformed offspring from crickets gutloaded with chick feed. This was this was just a study done by some locals in the reptile hobby and the outcome was not pretty. Now the only thing that was done different in this study was feeding the crickets chick feed. All other chams in this study were fed crickets which were gutloaded with everyday cricket gutloads. And there was no outward affect to the babies. I just posted as a warning to you not to start a war of conflict here. I will try to dig through and get pics of the deformed chams and post on here soon. Have a great day :D

OK, cool, Steve. It will be interesting to see the details when you get a chance to post 'em. Were the crickets feed chick feed exclusively or was it part of an otherwise balanced diet?

My ultimate goal is to do right by the chameleon. The problem with that is that most cricket places don't gut load their crickets and most owners at best buy a gutload from the petstore. I suspect this girl has been raised exclusively on petstore crickets since there was no mention of gutloading by the previous owner.

Hey No problem I just try to help those out who are asking questions like this. I shouldnt really have posted on this for the simple fact that I didnt have this experiance myself it was purely my pics and word of mouth. Any how the group of crickets were fed exclusivly chick feed as the crickets balanced diet. Its anybodies goal to provide the best possible care for there chams (I hope).
The best thing you can do is start feeding your crickets a well balanced diet and your cham should show those signs of being well fed also. Thanks Again as soon as I get the pics up I will .:)
