CITES 2008 - no Three horns

Seems the export quotas for Tanzania's 3-horn species (deremensis, meru's, etc.) has been nixed for WC animals.

F1's will be permitted, but not very many.

Chris, do you know much more about this? Any idea if this is a 2008 only thing, possibly to assess the wild populations?

Interesting, to say the least. Hopefully, the increased demand for the F1's will lead to these animals ending up in only the most capable hands in the future.

It's always bothered me to see deremensis and merus sold cheaply by ignorant dealers at reptile shows. Looks like that might be over with for the time being.

Any one that knows more about this, fill me in!

I talked to chris carter not to long ago about this and he told me tanzania was shut down completely. He also told me Madagascar has been shut town too (he didnt know how long) and he told me he believes this is because of the parsons found in indonesia. both chris carter and chris anderson will probably chime in

Funny, I was just looking through LLL's stocklist and marvelling at how many 3-horns from Tanz they have, even after all the talk about population studies being done before any 2008 permits were issued. Guess that makes it official. Get 'em while you can folks.

Yes, the Tanzanian three-horned species are not being let out as WC for 2008. I guess we'll have to see what happens in 2009. It could return to allowing a quota out or who knows, maybe its a step toward additional export quota cuts on other species. How many Ch. melleri are exported from Tanzania every year compared to how many are produced? The same can be said for most of these species unfortunately
