Climbing on walls??

I've had my guy for quite a while. I don't understand why he always climbs on the walls of the enclosure. He has plenty of foliage, branches, vines and leaves to climb on. I had to put up plastic chicken wire in the enclosure so he wouldn't get his nails stuck in the mesh. He has lost one nail that I can see and there's just a nub where is was. When he gets his nails stuck, he pulls and they get pulled out of his hands and feet. I'm not sure how to stop it... Thoughts?

I think they climb on the sides because its the most direct route sometimes. One of my chameleons has little to no nails and i have had good luck by putting branches on the sides with zip ties.

That's sorta what I did. I used fishing line to tie branches to the sides. Nothing is even touching the base of the enclosure.

I don't understand it either. My guy has two hibiscus, a LARGE number of vines and about six perches in a large cage and I still find him hanging upside down on the wall from time to time sunning himself. He also climbs the all when hunting food. I think @Damicofam6 is most accurate - a straight line is the fastest route!

I hope your guy stops hurting himself in the process though! Good luck! :)
