Could a wild grasshopper kill a chameleon?

Just trying to make sense of my chameleon dying. A last meal. I noticed that these hoppers produce a mouth secretion. Desperate to find food for chameleon since it was only eating superworms.

I don't think this is on you. Nothing you have done would kill a cham in 3 to 4 months. Even if you found a great vet, there was likely an existing issue when you got him.
Reptile show and he was only $40. I don't know if he was wild caught. I have learned much from this forum. I think that since he was a poor feeder from the beginning that something was wrong. A cricket or superworm every few days even when other crickets were in cage did not seem right.

yeah, he was not eating anywhere near enough. Don't beat yourself up over it, it was not your fault.

I recommend pinching off the leggs of grasshoppers before feeding them to chameleons. This since the legs can be formidable and could cause internal problems. You could possibly have fed a wild grasshopper that was exposed to some amount of pesticides. That is why it is important to captive breed grasshoppers colonies or collect in an area that is known to be pesticide free area.

Because he was not eating crickets and was only eating superworms, like 1 every 3 days. I collected moths and craneflys, damselflies and others to try to get him to eat.
Chams do get spoiled with superworms and will refuse other feeders. But I agree with others that there most likely was an underlying health issue that he had before you got him. I’m sorry you lost him. He was beautiful.
