Crested Gecko or Dart Frogs

So I almost got a veiled chameleon but I decided since I'm only 15 I should probably wait until I can pay for vet bills and provide the best life possible for it. So now I don't know if I should get a crested gecko or dart frogs. I have experience with reptiles, I've had a crested gecko before, I've found tree frog tad poles in the woods and raised them, and I have a ball python. I'm leaning more toward a crested gecko because I really miss my little guy, but then dart frog setups look awesome and they're such interesting little creatures. My mom wants me to get dart frogs and my sister thinks I should get another crested gecko. I need help making this decision!

If I had to choose one or the other, id go with the crested gecko.

You can handle them, and they don't require an expensive misting system in their set up.

Dart frogs are beautiful and fun to take care of, in an ideal situation you would be able to get them both.

That's just my opinion.

Think about the pros and cons of each and make your decision based on that.
(Cost, care requirements, etc.)

Thank you! I think I'm leaning more towards a crested gecko because they don't require live food and I want to learn more about taking care of lizards.

I'm homeschooled and I like to study zoology, so when I'm studying reptiles I'll watch how my snake sheds, eats, etc. I think being able to read about a certain type of animal and then being able to see it in your own home and not having to go to the zoo to see them, is really cool.

Couldn't agree more, good to see younger people involved like that. Personally, I can't wait to keep darts. I love the eco system set up. Its like a reef on land. I really enjoy the whole natural aspect; plants, bugs, soil, etc though. I'm more of a hands off type. For lizards and animals that you'd interact more with, I prefer chameleons and want a tegu one day. So I haven't really read much into crested geckos, but I've heard good things. Frogs are probably better for observing, geckos for interacting.

glad I'm not in your shoes ....LOL just kidding. Besides my Favorite reptile my Panther chameleon. I am a proud mother of 2 Crested Geckos and 5 Dendrobates Auratus dart frogs. The only thing about dart frogs is making sure you have flies on hand for feeding. I used to make my own cultures but haven't made some in about a year. I love this little guys, had them now for 4 years. There's a pic of them. If you have questions let me know k?

Yeah I'm thinking of doing an all natural crested gecko setup, real plants, isopods, everything like that. I would love a chameleon, I even got all the plants and I had someone that was gonna make the cage, but I decided I won't be able to provide the best home for it, so I decided I should start with something smaller and work myself up to a Cham. When I get older and have my own place then I'll have a dedicated room for my reptiles where I can keep my dogs out.

I don't think a crestie will let you down, on the plus side you'll get some reptile experience and they're very tame geckos :)
I mean just look at em!

I know I've had a crested gecko before and they're awesome. He was my sisters and she was scared of him, don't know how but she was, so I took him. Sadly he was from petco and he passed away. I miss him so much, so I've decided on a crested gecko. I'm already buying plants to make a live viv for it. I'll most likely get one next month because I'm going to another reptile the expo then, I'm so excited to have another crestie! Your little guy is so cute!

I will have some very new babies hatching soon. They won't be anything special colorwise likely in my opinion. But the mother is a low percentage harley with bright reds and orange when fired. And the father is a high percentage harley with about 75-80% pinstriping (female is more like 55-65%) and he has some beautiful mocha browns and deep creams. I am pretty desperate to find them homes honestly when they are a safe weight to ship out. And you will have a pick of the litter since I have six eggs currently and that's too many XD. They should be hatching in 2-3 weeks and I just need to get them up to weight and move them safely to healthy and happy homes. I will be handle etc, as soon as they are a minimum of 3 grams. They will be well fed on various CGD and insects and fruit. So hopefully they will have a wide pallet. The selling feed won't be much around 50-65 depending on the color and patterns you choose etc. The rest is just waiting and shipping. I am not saying like to pressure you, just saying these guys will be spoiled as all my babies are. And I just need to rehome them into safe and healthy place where I know they will be well taken care of. Too many babies XD.

They will be housed together for at most likely the first week, otherwise they will be housed seperately.

I have around $90 dollars to spend on one at the moment. I would love to buy from a forum member! Don't know how my mom would feel about having one shipped though. When they hatch let me know. It will be kept in a 12x12x18in until December when I should be able to have an 18x18x24in live viv set up. I have a feeling a lot of the geckos at the expo I'm going to go to are going to way out of my budget and are going to be more in the $150+ range, so definitely let me know!

Oh that's not bad at all thanks, my buddy is considering one for his first reptile. Maybe I'll try one down the road. My next creatures outside of chams are going to dart frogs and croc skinks.

I would say that may be a bit too large? But I will likely be shipping them when they are around 10-15 grams minimum. I don't mess with sizes even with hardy babies like cresteds. So depending on how large they are you can just keep them in a larger kritter keeper until a correct size.

This is mama, both of the parent pictures are of them unfired. Take this base color and probably multiple the orange and reds in it by at least 5 and you got what she fires as.

This is daddy, once again unfired, but he only goes a couple shades darker in mocha colors and cream colors.

Both of them are pretty but I don't want to work with them in the long run, so these babies won't be kept for me for breeding because of their lineage no matter what they come out as. They will make great pets because I hope to make them social and easy to feed. The eggs are beautiful and nice and fat.

These are the males of my group I intend to work with, I have a few female morphs I plan to buy just don't have them yet.

The bottom is my patternless boy, he has amazingly high cresting, full pinstripes except he shows phantom pinning. He's beautiful, and super docile.

They're all beautiful! Definitely let me know. I'll be keeping it in a smaller quarantine tank for a couple weeks before I move it into the 12x12x18 to make sure its eating and I can keep a close eye on it. I just know from my last guy ,that was only one or two months old, that they will use every bit of space that you give them.

Thought you guys would be excited to see my first female added to the group once she is shipped

She is beautiful a lavender, cream full pinner with some ok cresting. She comes from excellent bloodlines, her parents produce high creams and lavenders that fire up black. She doesn't fire quite black, a couple shades lighter and if she could pass that on I would honestly prefer that to the black. I prefer purple colors to the black. I plan to breed her with a male who has super high crests. So likely it would be either Valor most often or Strudel. Since her crests are rather lacking. And Snowman would have beautiful colors to pair with her but not great crests.

I will likely get at least two more females, I would prefer to get 3 more if not 4, but it depends on the space and how much my mother tolerates XD But I don't think she will complain as much after she sees the babies and the money they will make. She is worried more about the money, while I am worried about the genetics and possibilities XD
