Cricket explosion! 🦗💣

That's the great thing about crickets is you can start with a few and scale to thousands almost overnight. The bad news is you can go again from thousands to none quickly, too. I think of dubia as like the tortoise and crickets as the hare. The other thing about crickets is I just fidn everything loves them and they are dumb and will walk right infront of things. Salamanders, frogs, lizards everything just seems to go for them. crickets are the most widely accepted of all the insects I've ever raised.

After trying my hand at breeding various insect feeders, I’ve finally gotten around to crickets. The last couple of times I’ve ordered crickets, I’ve gotten an extra 500 adults for breeding only. I thought the first batch was quite prolific. There were hundreds of babies that are currently still in the process of growing (not yet big enough for feeders). Hard to see how many as I’ve given them lots of tubes and egg flats to spread out in.

My second batch just started hatching a couple of days ago and holy crickets! There must be thousands of them! Plus, there’s still eggs that haven’t yet hatched! I had to move the little egg bins to another bin. I added a larger piece of egg flat and within minutes they started swarming over that and they’re still packed in on the undersides! I hadn’t expected this much success. Definitely didn’t get them enough food and will have to give them more. Absolutely thrilled at the success. 🤗

What medium do you use for them to lay eggs in?

I got some plastic food storage containers from the dollar store and fill them with moistened coco coir. I cut out the lid and hot glued in regular window screening so they can lay the eggs thru the screen but not able to eat them.
