Cricket Housing Help

Hello Everyone!

So I ordered Crickets for Chevy. Seen as how he eats them about every other day, he actually likes them ALLOT. I accidently clicked the button for "500" instead of "100" and I got a box full of these little suckers:)

Any suggestions on how to house them? I have had his past crickets in a Tupperware container with hole in the top, but, there are way to many for that.

I so was not expecting that at all, but, bright side is don't need to get crickets for some time now.

Get a cheap plastic storage container- 20 gallon walmart $6

If you take course sandpaper and rough up the sides about 2/3 of the way up, they will be able to climb that far up and no farther- gives them more surface area.

any large plastic tubs will do, there are "critter keepers" or "cricket keepers" that work well if you get a large size too.

I work at a nature center, we actually kept them in a tall plastic garbage can for a while with egg flats to climb on.

Sounds like a great start for breeding, then you will never have to buy more. Search online on breeding crickets, YouTube has some good videos on it.

I just use a 10 gal fish tank. I took extra mesh and covered the lid, because inevitably you will get a fruit fly or 2, and that helps preventing them from escape. I have egg crates in 2/3 of the tank, and their food and water crystals in the other 1/3. I put the whole thing on top of my bearded dragon cage to keep it a perfect temp and am good to go. BTW, I chuckled at your numbers, because I have 3 chams and just received my order of 1500 crickets yesterday

Housing crickets tip

didn't go as far as to sandpaper, I read (and succeeded) that you can just put a ring of clear packaging tape around the inside of the tub and they can't climb past it. My crickets are happily in a 20 gallon tub full of egg cartons and don't get past the tape. I did cut out a square in the lid and cover it with screen. Pretty cheap at Lowes (although I had to look myself a while because the sexist old man told me they only had 20 ft rolls of it) but I kept looking and found a small roll for about 6 bucks. They apparently thought I should get a man to screen for me. Lol. Good luck with your cage! I recommend flukes calcium cricket quencher and adding some lettuce kale or greens and maybe some peels from carrots :)

HOLY SMOKES! They eat that much in 5 days! How many do you have? Hahaha.. I want to see the video of a feeding frenzy :D

Was a little over 160 baby veils (about 10 weeks old). They were almost three months old. I had some young panthers, also (maybe 30-60, depending on day). All day long: mist, feed, clean poop, mist, clean poop, feed, REPEAT ALL DAY, EVERY DAY! worst experience EVER! As far as feeding frenzy, you are correct. Separated them into 24"x24"x48" cages (x4), according to size. They would step on each other, two would strike same cricket, etc.. had to overplant the cages and even used some 36" cages to go with the 48". Just tooooo many.

That is a story to tell to convince idiots like me they don't really want to breed chameleons lol
