Cricket Madness

Hey everyone, today I bought 1000 crickets to prepare for my cham to come later this week, well I found out how crazy these things could be to get into the bin, I was just wondering how to move them from the box or whatever to the storage bin without losing any, also is there another staple thats easier to maintain than crickets, maybe a worm or something??

I HATE CRICKETS, and now they are all over my garage:mad:

Dubia roaches are a dream. I've always hated dealing with crix. And they stink and jump and just bleh! Once you get over the roach factor, dubias are easily my all time favorite feeder. :)

Depending on the size of the cage you are putting them in, the following may help. Using a razor knife, cut a line along the "small" side of the cricket box, cutting through but keeping the end still in place. Put that side of the box face down into the cricket cage and then remove the end piece that was cut. Shake and tap vigorously while keeping the box opening lower than the top of the cricket cage. If the egg crate does not fall out on its own, pull it out and shake the "clingers" off. It might take some practice but this technique will get "most" of your crickets where you want them! :) If your cricket cage is too small to do this directly, you can do the same thing into a smooth sided storage tote first and then poor the crickets into your cricket holding cage. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

I keep 2,000 crickets in a 40 gallon high fish tank with a mesh cover and like 5-7 egg crates carrots, sponge. I haven't noticed any escaping but if you try to bait them into something with food, and a place to high you might be able to catch a lot of them.

one trick that worked for me was to take a large clear garbage bag and dump the whole box into it then tear a hole in the corner of the bag and dump them into the bin.

now im more comfortable and i just take the box and hold it upside down inthe bin and open it and bang out all the crickets.

I just cut mine open and flip it over above the bin and bang the heck out of it.... but I also let my Chinese Water Dragon supervise the operation and he is more than happy to catch any crickets that escape :D

make sure your bin is big enough.

i agree with ed if you want to be careful. thats like the perfect step by step but basically what i used to do was what k9luvin said. once you get the hang of it its pretty simple just open it quick and hit it HARD to pop out the eggcrates and smack the crap out of it to get rid of the clingers.

i used to keep a tokay gecko freerange in the lizard area. he helped a lot with managing escapes. the wolf spiders took care of the rest. lol my dad used to feed the ones that made it over to the heater during the winter.
