Crickets driving me mad!

I got a juvenile veiled chameleon around a month. He's called HAMMY! Hammy eats well and devours his crickets whenever he's hungry. My problem is with the buggers escaping and causing havoc with my night sleeping! ? I've a couple of sticky traps in use inc one with syrup, strawberries and sugar! Sadly, its not catching the culprit! I don't want to stop getting crickets as I've read cockroaches inc dubia ones can cause allergies and respiratory problems. Not good! Some of the escapees chirp both day and night. PLEASE HELP HAMMYS DADDY?

Crickets will literally fart/poop themselves to death, unless you fume it into your room...


I feed crickets, till i can get them to eat any other staple that doesnt chirp. No one has ever posted about being allergic to dubia. CHams have the most delicate respitory systems in the lizard kingdom, and the cage is right next to the feeder box of dubia.

Id say dubia and discoids, and a bit of cleaner crew, is the cleanest smelling box you will find. Old veggies go in, bugs come out.

Well put, a lot of it is scare tactics by extermination companies. You can be allergic to roaches, for example I wear a mask when I'm around my 39 colonies in the bug room, but just as a precaution... so far haven't noticed any symptoms. It would usually take excessive amounts of frass and poor ventilation to develop allergies.

On the other hand, apparently kids that grow up around mice and roaches actually have less immune problems lol. Also, as far as I've seen, florida and the rest of the south still have plenty of people alive without respiratory issues

When I buy adult crickets I pull the noise making wings off of all of them as they go into my cricket keeper, you can try doing the same.

Can you seal up your enclosure so they can't get out?

People thought i was nutts when i was taking nail clippers to the few dozen crickets i used to get for the tarantula.

There’s several other feeders that are better than crickets. Roaches and silkworms top my lists and crickets are my back up. This may help.

Yeah, I feel partially cruel pulling the wings, but I cannot deal with the sound, it drives me insane. I may start clipping instead of pulling, maybe it's more humane?

Have you tried banded crickets? They are much quieter.

I have not, define much quieter? I currently keep my chameleon in my bedroom, I think any noise is pretty much too much noise.

I guess it depends on how sensitive to noise you are when sleeping. Banded crickets will still chirp, but it is much softer in volume. I keep mine in the garage and every time I go out there for whatever and various times of day and night, I don’t hear any chirping. My roaches moving around are louder. Just my experience though.

Banded crickets are soooooo much better in every way. It's not even a contest. They live longer, are hardier, less noisy, don't smell, etc. Only thing you could complain about with them is they jump higher.

I always buy banded crickets from Josh's Frogs and they are very very quiet.

In the UK you can get light brown noiseless crickets.
Silent brown crickets I think they are called.
