I bought a baby male veiled chameleon today. The woman who sold it to me said it was probably between four and six weeks of age.
Here's my enclosure:
It's an opaque/clear (basically, you can see shadows and light but can't really see through it) tupperware container that's about 18 inches long, 12 inches tall, 12 inches wide.
I lined the bottom with two layers of white paper towels.
The only cage furniture is a plant I bought at Wal-Mart (the pot is about six inches tall, and the plant is another six inches on top of that, so all in all it reaches just to the top of the tupperware).
I tried to find a plant that most closely resembled the plant in its cage where I bought it, and ended up with a species called 'Arboricola Sp.'.
When I got it home, I gave the plant a very brief wash in the sink and set it, pot and all, inside the tupperware, then wrapped window-screen fabric around the pot so the little guy can climb up and down from the plant to the floor.
Then, instead of a tupperware lid, I have an open-mesh screen lid that sits securely on top of the cage. And on that I have a 50-watt UVB bulb inside of a 5" heat lamp. There's about a one-inch clearance between the screen and the bulb so the chameleon can't burn himself, and it's also positioned on one side of the tank so he can climb completely out of range of the beam.
I sprayed the plant with water and also set a few ice cubes on top of the screen to drip through to the plant below.
My question here is whether or not this set-up will be safe...and mainly, whether or not the plant is toxic or whether pesticides will be a problem. (I DID wash the plant, but not in any great detail).
Thanks in advance everyone.
