Critter Keeper for a few days?

Hey guys so I was wondering a critter keeper could house a chameleon for a few days.

Its a medium Critter Keeper.

I have a baby chameleon, she is very small, and she has a cage, however. There is a forest fire near my town and we may get evacuated (we are currently in Pre Evacuation). I need to be ready to leave in a moment notice and need to setup something to take the cham. I dont think the fire will reach here (even if we are evacuated) however They are cutting our power, and I dont have a dripper, I tried to make one, though I dont know how long this will last.

Would a critter keeper work for a few days if necessary?

if that is your only option i suppose then thats what you have to do. how big is her cage? I would try to take the cage with me or bring her over to a family's or friends house that wont have to be evacuated. also for a dipper just take a plastic container and poke a hole in the bottom, that's what i do.

I made a dripper like that already. I am not sure if a gallon would last long enough though. Last time this happened we were gone for 8 days.

The entire town and all surrounding towns with in 100 miles are getting evacuated, that includes are family and Friends. We live up in the mountains with forest all around us for lots and lots (The Arizona Rim, which is what is on fire)

we have to drive 2 hours away and get a hotel. Her cage is fairly large, large enough that it isn't going to fit in the car so that is not an option (22x21x45, wood so doesnt dissemble).

I dont think the fire would come here, I just dont think it would be enough water. Also like I said they are cutting the power (the other towns have already been evacuated and they cut their power).

I may be able to find a pet store with a small cage (but larger than the CK) at the town we go to but I am not optimistic as it is an even smaller town.

The red solo cup with a pin hole in the bottom worked great for me in the beginning til I got my big dripper then Mister.

Well that would work great except, it needs to last a week+. I dont need a dripper, outside of right now and the town is shut down so cant buy one (they wouldnt hold enough anyway) I have a mistking, but they are shutting the power off.

They may not, but they did the others so not worth the chance.

Why wouldn't the Solo cup work for a week + just refill it with water anytime you need it?

I think they think you mean that they should leave the chameleon behind with just the dripper for water. Obviously, not a good plan! cyberlocc, I think they mean to use a dripper with the Critter Keeper.

Chameleons are shipped all the time in small tupperware, etc. It will stress them out, for sure, but if you can bring her heat, lights, etc, as well as a few vines and fake plants, you may be able to set up a small "free range" wherever you end up, for her to roam at least for part of the time. Being stressed by a small enclosure and travel is likely to be less of a concern than her running out of water while you are away, or, heaven forbid, your house catches fire. Make sure you bring her temp and humidity gauges!

If you have to evacuate, pack small and light, prioritize on the critical (UV, calcium powder, etc), and make do with what you can carry, but definitely take her with you. Even for two weeks, you can make a critter keeper work with some creativity. Best of luck to you guys - hope evac isn't necessary!

Thanks guys, The free range is a good idea I will do that. And yes defiantly bringing lights and misters.

Any news on the evacuation?

At the moment no, I think they have somewhat contained the fire. The entire town was covered in smoke when I went to sleep last night. It is really scary, we have had fires before but not this close in a long time. The worst part is how fast its moving, this fire started around noon yesterday and by 6, it was 3-4000 acres, and 10 miles from my town.

They are bleeding our lakes dry, with water tankers and that fire Repellent is being flown in from Phoenix. Worst part is its hot and windy, even more so today which does not help.

Edit: I guess we are going to Phoenix (about 5 hours away) to stay with family there if/when we leave. So I will transport her in the Critter Keeper and grab a cage from a pet store there. A small one I think would be okay the cham is only 3 months. (like a 16x16x20)

Here is a news report for it if anyone wants to see.

Our small town, is surrounded by woods like that all around, plus lots of trees in town. So its scary.

Wow, I know Show Low! We used to live in Tucson and we had a lightning strike on Mt Lemmon that went big and fast. That dry climate was pretty bad for fires. Burned a couple of days if I remember right.

Keep us posted, if you can!

Will do, and yep I live in Pinetop :).

The news lady at 5 yesterday made the town mad lol. Because she said well there is a fire, which is ruining the valley peoples weekend get away plans. Like seriously what about the 30k people that live here.

Its going to be 116 in phoenix this weekend, god I dont want to go there :(.

I don't blame you. I much prefer Tucson to Phoenix. I like Phoenix but Tucson, especially TanqueVerde Valley where we lived is much cooler. Still hot, but not as bad.

Have you looked into collapsible clothes hampers? I used one from Walmart that looks like this as an outdoor cage for a time:

If you loop the straps over a clothes hanger with notches, you could hang it in the motel shower or wherever you could fit it as need be. Not sure if that helps if you can't get to a Walmart or store that sells them.

I use a thing like the clothes hamper for my outdoor cage. They work great and allow easy outdoor cages later on if you hang them near a small tree on a shepard's hook.

U can always use a container with fake plant in there,
Items u need to be simple :
Food container or shoe plastics container
Fake plant
Hand mister
Supplements
Digital Temperature monitor (battery operating )
Feeders
Dont worry about UVB light, since u got the nature sun,and urs is a junior baby,30min sun ray around 5pm is good for her, extra shades n misting during the sun exposure with temperatures monitor cautiously ,hope u n the family are staying well, and Im glad they are contain the fire, stay strong and safe!!

You can always use a larger storage container with some plastic vines too and just cut a hole in the lid with enough rim so the baby can't climb out.

Just wanted to update on this. Pre Evacuation just got lifted. The fire had passed the trigger line, however they felt they had it contained enough and now winds are down and it is suppose to rain. So they lifted Pre Evac.
