Cross Breeding chameleon?

Hi guys,

Just wondering, If I was to get an Ambanja or Nosy Be chameleon.
Will I be able to cross breed an Ambanja with a Nosy Be or Ambilobe?
Or Will I only be able to breed Ambanja/Ambanja, Nosy Be/Nosy Be etc.

About to purchase one of these chameleons and was thinking what could be potential breeding partners for them.

Thanks,
Swarsh

Happy New Year ! :)

They are the same species, so yes you could do it. But, may I ask why mix locales?

You have no idea what you may have just started lol... Most dont recommend it, but you can do it. Some breeders do it, but it is ALL documented..

Just to test and see what I can produce I guess.
I mean will there be health risks? but see'ing as they are same species just different colours there won't be health issues?

But in terms of getting them to breed will a Nosy Be and a Ambilobe get along well ?

Thanks,
Swarsh

Crosses are some of the most colorful panthers I have seen. There can be health risks, such as infertile chameleons. Not being able to reproduce. But most controversy over this is, you cannot tell female panthers locales apart( They ALL look the same). So If some one gets a cross female thinking its a pure female, then breeds it then they have a bunch of crosses they didnt want. They can be hard to sell, most people want pure locales anyway. I believe if it is well documented, there should be no issue. JMO

Well I actually have some yemens at the moment and they have bred for me (around 40 eggs incubating right this moment!)
So I could say I have tried breeding before :p

But as for panthers I am not too sure about the crossing so just wanted to ask :)

Hmm I understand what you mean coldblooded. Guess I might just stick with one breed then :) unless I can find further information on crossing these !

Thanks

Before you even begin considering breeding, I would recommend learning all there is about chameleons (obviously).

But then, you also need to learn LOCALES, SPECIES, GENETICS, etc....

if you have a deep understanding of all that, then maybe you should consider it...

NOTE: just because you CAN get eggs/breed doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Yes, certainly you could (if the animals are willing) breed an Ambanja with a Nosy Be or Ambilobe. They are all the same species. There are no health issues resulting from cross-locals.

You might want to look at the website of board sponsor Kammerflage Kreations.

They do a lot of cross breeding and appear to do an amazing job of documenting what they do and the results. It will give you an idea of what sort of animals can be produced and what sort of detailed record keeping you will want to do.

You also need to know that you cannot sell your females as anything other than "cross bred". You have to make that very clear to anyone who buys them. It might be fairly obvious with the males, but the females don't show their history as clearly and if someone thinks they are buying a pure locale but it is, in fact, a cross, you have committed fraud (whether it would ever be acted on is doubtful, but I trust you not to want to do that).

Eliza is corret - very important to declare that offspring are crosses (male and females both - I've had a few male nosybe x ambilobe crosses that appeared to be pure Nosy and others appear pure ambilobe). Crosses can be awesome, unique animals, but they dont always sell for as much as pure breeds

why wold there be health risks if he is breeding chameleons of the same species??

Bump
Hi Swarsh Hi guys, my first post and a bump, sorry ;)
I was just wondering if you went for it yet? I'd be interested to see the result if and when it happens.
On a side note I myself (white English/Irish) was crossed with a pure bred Asian nurse and she produced a healthy beautifuly coloured offspring albeit with a slightly firery temprement, cant see me seling him though :D
