i know that veilds nibble on plant matter sometimes but my 6 month veiled eats dead leaves that have fallen on purpose, has anyone had this happen, is it normal?

the bottom line is off course I don't know exactly why.
But, I am rationalizing that your chameleons might see certain "nutrients" found on the dead leaves, soil, etc that they are lacking in the diet and decided to eat it.

As long as you have taken care of the plants (wash it from the pesticide trace) and the soil (get rid the pesticide and fertilizer trace and shift any "large" materials to avoid impaction), you should not worry too much about it.

My hermit crabs, pill bugs, roaches and millipedes all munch on dead leaves. I was told they are getting nutrients and "tannin" for their shells, and also that the leaves act as an antioxidant, and provide fibre that helps to "clean out" digestive systems, like prunes do in humans. Maybe its similar for your chameleons?
