I have never made one myself yet but many of the DIY feeders that I have seen in here make the bottom with mesh. Perhaps so that any water from misters or misting will not collect in the bottom. But since you have a hook on your feeder, you can easily take it out to empty any water built up or any unwanted waste.Yup it can hold crickets and roaches. I made this one but haven't tested it yet.
