Development Of A Sambava

I've been seeing a lot of Sambavas coming of age on the forum lately, and figured I would share one of mine.
Most of you know that Sambavas are one of the slowest locales to reach full saturation in their color development.
To be honest, I have been intrigued by the colors of other Sambavas that have been offered by breeders recently.
The other thing that puzzles me, is how fast they are to develop color.
Anyways, I'd like to introduce my male Sambava named Vanilla Ice.
This thread will be bumped on occasion, so you can see he color development.

Freaking Mike

Not yet, Mike!
Give me a month or so, then go ahead and bump it.
S.O.B

Oh, I'm looking for flight quotes to Pomona, CA.
Better lock the doors to the hotel.

Ice,Ice,BABY! He looks like he's coloring up nicely...you can see a big difference during that last month. My favorite chameleon EVER was a female sambava named Jill, maybe you can get him a NICE girl sometime soon ;) I cant wait to see the continued progress.

BUMP :D:D:D

Pardon me while I get back on topic. :p

In our July clutch we had just 2 or 3 chams that began to color up early- in their third month. The rest are still fairly monochromatic, with a few showing the green cheek dots. The clutch is now 4 months old. The males are developing visible tail bulges, but are showing the coloration your Vanilla Ice shows in his 5th month photo.

It can make it tough on keepers. We have one keeper who purchased a male that is still monochromatic. He goes on this forum and sees his guy's clutch brothers showing some good color already, and wonders what's wrong with his. Can't blame him. It's not that anything's wrong, it's just that there were 3 guys out of that clutch that, for whatever reason, colored up real early. His guy has terrific bars, chevron, and belly stripes and will be a real looker when he comes in to his colors.

WE'RE HEADED TO POMONA, TOO. BUT...WE'LL GET OUR OWN HOTEL ROOM.:)

NICE WEBSITE LIZ, ENJOYED YOUR PHOTOS!

Gesang, I was NOT referring to your animals.
Your animals are beautiful.

Oh, no, I wasn't thinking you were directing that at us, but I did want to add that post here, to explain what can transpire. The slow coloration can be disheartening and confusing if a person doesn't realize it is normal. To be honest with you, I was really surprised at the color our clutch displayed in Sang's and FE's photos in an earlier thread.

Now that we have totally hijacked your color develpment thread... Sorry!

Post you baby sambava pics here.
I don't care.
Consolidate the thread into multiple animals from different lines coloring up.

Tyler, I'll sleep in my rental car before I'll share a room with Mike.:p

for the record, no disrespect intended.. :) i wasn't trying to hijack, i just figured the pic was relevant to the topic.,.sorry if i did:eek:

I, personally, was glad to see you post your pic :D. Your photo was totally relevant to this thread. And he's an incredibly handsome dude (the chameleon).

With the light hearted hijacking comment, I was referring more to us (me included) discussing the Pomona show. This will be our first BIG show we attend, and my husband and I are very excited about it. We won't have a table- we're just going as observers (and, hopefully, purchasers- but don't tell my husband that! ;)).

I have found my guy to be quite slow with colour development. Here's a few pics over the past 11 months.

The one thing I noticed about the 'U' in my guy...it sort of looks like a 'V' because one of his splotches from his belly is pretty much attached to the bottom of the U. I hope nobody holds it against him...lol

His parents were wild caught and daddy was outstanding! I can only hope he's worth the wait, and get him a nice girlfriend next summer! I will work on a picture of him at 11 months old, however he's shedding here soon and gapes if you even get too close to the cage, so perhaps some others can show me some purdy sambavas to get me all drooly!

They're gonna start putting limits on how many chameleon breeders can do these So Cal shows. We make fun of the Daytona shows being nothing but ball pythons.... You'll probably be better off as a spectator!

Right on:D, Well i hope you two have fun! I'm going to try my hardest to make it as well..I Just went to the herp show last weekend here in phx and had a blast! The Pomona show should be great show for chameleons..

Lovely cham, Justin! I think the monochromatic stage is very appealing; is this a Sambava thing? (Didn't observe in my Ambilobe.)

Oh man, I know that feeling. Nothing but ball pythons, beardies and corn snakes up here in the great North West, apparently. On the bright side, if I ever do shows, I will have a monopoly.

On topic, though, I have always found it interesting that some locales show color much sooner than others. My little Ambilobe took quite a while to start showing constant color and I thought at first I may have gotten a dud. It can be very confusing when you look at the forum and see extremely bright 4 month olds and your seven month old has less color. :\ I am saying that it also varies by individual. What is better to breed- an intensely bright individual that fires up and shows colors a few months late or a prodigy of a cham that shows colors early on in life?

I would be of the opinion that both are good so long as their colors are bright enough as adults to merit passing on. It seems that we want instant gratification- I like to enjoy watching the chams grow slowly and come into their awesome colors. It is part of the fun.

NICE WEBSITE LIZ, ENJOYED YOUR PHOTOS!

Thanks for your kind words, Sandy! I also really love your new website and have visited it quite a few times to check out your beauties. Your Sambava, Degas, is a particularly stunning male!
