I think as long as I own a tank there will be a discus in it.

Red Turques and my wild.

Wilds are a PITA to keep alive. But they are my favorites.

I'm of the majority that finds discus do better in a bare bottomed tank. I'm pushing it with the dishes full of gravel. Just means extra water changes.

They come in many many more, prettier colors. I'm just more of a naturalistic keeper. Neon orange just seems wrong to me.

Very nice! Discus are one of the many, many things I'd like to keep someday (after setting up another salt water tank, one for clown loaches, one for Geophagus and allies, one for an oscar...)

Is these saltwater or fresh? I know there are freshwater types of fish like these, I was going to get some but apparently their hard to take care of.

Very nice, gorgeous fish...I use to have 4 tanks, 3 salt and one fresh with Discus. I could never get them to breed (I had angels before and they breed like crazy). I use RO water because of the hard water here in FL.
That all changed during the three Hurricanes in 2004 that left me without power for a total of 15 days. All my fish died and I decided not to have anymore fish until I can afford a whole house generator, that can run 24/7.

Back up Generators have saved my rear and my wallet more times than I can remember. They are a must have if you live in Florida and keep tropicals.

Did you try running the discus tank through some seasonal (dry/rainy) changes? That usually gets em going.

I've bred them before. The parents take a lot of work but the fry are a real nightmare. Daily large water changes...no thanks.

Yes Cush, they are fresh water.

Beautiful discus, wooo. You must have a huge tank. Those fish get BIG and need so much water. As pretty as they are I doubt I could keep them, though one day I do want Batfish (the saltwater equivelent of Discus).

Not so much, they do get big but aren't active swimmers.. I keep them in a 40g but most breeders keep them 1 pair to a 20G tall.

It should be closer to a 100gal/ They may not swim much, but are so sensitive they need the water quantity. And they should eventually get about the size of a dinner plate.

100 gals! Where are you getting this info from?

No offense but I've been keeping them like this for about 7 yrs now. They do not need 100 gals of water. The only thing you would accomplish by keeping them in such a large tank is you could go hella lot longer between water changes. 50% 2 times a week is plenty for 2 adults in a 20 gal T. As they get older they need less water changes, so daily WCs are not necessary for adults. Fry and juveniles, yes, adults, no..not unless you are spawning them that is.

To say they get as big as a dinner plate is stretching it a bit. They get bigger than a saucer but are far from dinner plate in size. About 7 inches from the dorsal to the bottom of the tummy is average. The 2 big ones in my pics are full grown.
