Do your research, Valspar!!

Just looked at it again and that is really amazing CG. When I looked at it briefly the first time, I thought they had used real panthers and just used CG for the mouth movement and fake color changing, but looking at it closely it is clearly pure CG.

They must have either had someone with a lot of knowledge about chameleons working on it, or did very detailed research. Much better work than the Geico gecko.

I know that chameleons change colors for several reasons like anger, basking, mood in general, but I also believe to some degree they change to blend in to their environment whether intentional or not I can't say. Ever look for a veiled chameleon and have a real hard time finding it? Now this may not hold true for panthers I don't know I've never owned one, but IMHO it is assuredly true for some species. Herpetologist said chameleons had no ears so they can't hear. Well I know for a fact my chameleon responds to the slightest noise if that isn't hearing what is it?

A couple of thoughts about this. Chams are expert "blenders" not just because of their actual colors, but because of the broad patchy pattern of colors that break up their silhouettes (similar to the stripes on zebras, the spots on leopards), by their behavior (ability to hold very still, their shaky leaf walk, their eyes that are mostly hidden by the fused eyelids, their ability to scan the world around them without moving their heads, etc). The more patchy pattern they can produce the less likely they will be spotted in foliage that is moving in a breeze. Of course some of the color change is for display, but the idea is that they can change their color which can confuse a potential predator or warn one off. A solid colored animal is much easier for a predator to track. Large eyes are easier to spot and many predators search for eye motion.

Its true that chams don't have external ears, so their "hearing" is very limited. They mostly respond to motion and vibration, which is low frequency sound. Your cham is most likely responding to visual movement and vibrations nearby.

Being in the visual effects industry I will just say that I love Valspar ads. There is a TON of work in making these ads and I feel they've done amazing work and it probably cost a pretty penny! They definitely perpetuate annoying myths however and I see your point there....

I like the Valspar ads too. And as far as movie chameleons the ones in Tangled are far better than in the movie Rango. That one is just plain creepy. I couldn't even watch the movie because it just looked so wrong!

they are 100% full CG (computer generated) chameleons for sure.... The fact that people here are debating this attests to how amazing of a job they did!

ridgebax1 Rango is SOOOO DOPE! You need to give it another shot!

rango looks like a grasshopper mixed with a horned dragon mixed with a veiled chameleon. The only thing they got right is the eyes.
