I have a 10 gallon glass aquarium I am planning on using to house some dubia, and hopefully start a colony. Does it sound like a good idea since its all glass? Can someone point me to a good thread on how to keep them properly and multiply like crazy. Thank you!
I remember reading that if you use glass you can either spray paint the outsides black or tape black construction paper around it to keep it dark, that helps the breeding. I just put mine on top of a regular household heating pad.
i personally use a 35 gallon sterilite tote. heat pad under the side you put the egg crate. on the other end i use one bowl for veggies or fruit and the other bowl i put cat food in while building the colony. once the colony is established i switch the cat food out for a gutload recipe.
note: i recently started another colony and put it on the back porch with no heat pad. the room is usually around 80-90. the colony is going crazy!
I use catfood for the time being while I'm trying to boost the colony and they take it down super fast. For water I'm using watergels everynow and then and leftover veggies. My babies I am trying to feed my picky cham are getting what I gutload the cricks with
I've read about a few folks using glass tanks .. it should be a problem , but I would try and block it out... I'm using a plastic tote w smooth sides .. I cut a hole on top glued a piece of screen on ... The link listed above is solid..lots of good info ... and theres actually a few youtube videos I found useful...
YOu should keep them in a dark place or paint the outside of the tank black. You also need to keep them warm. I heard that feeding them oranges helps them to breed.
Home Depot carries a 20 gallon blue sterilite type tote for $6. I has the completely smooth sides you are looking for. The baby roaches can climb the silicone that they use to join the aquarium glass at the corners. You can run packing tape or a layer of vasoline around the top to create a barrier.
