this is just what I have noticed with my one Jackson- and I have wondered about them also absorbing threw the vent- I almost NEVER see her drink - but she often sits with her rear under her dripper, her vent very relaxed - and tilts so the water hits right on her vent- WHY ? I have no idea - but she does this often - I too, would like to know if they can in fact absorb threw the vent- 
there is also a female Jax here for a "date" and I noticed she also does this -
CindyS- I know its hard to make vet bills when you were not planing on it- I dont know if this will work for you, but its not a bad deal - maybe you can use this to help on the bill - its like a credit card, but for the animal med bill, 6 mo same as cash - I hope this helps - http://www.carecredit.com/
