Eating Pothos

Today I noticed something a little odd with my male Veiled Chameleon. I have a few Pothos plants in his cage and I had noticed that he's been munching on them quite a bit lately. I've been seeing bite marks and sections of the leaves missing so I know he's eating them. I know that Golden Pothos plants are safe for Chameleons to eat but my question is is it safe and healthy for him to eat an excessive amount of the plant? Do I need to posibly remove the plants from his cage if this is truly an issue? He's completely healthy and active and eating his crickets as he would.

Try gutloading better and offering greens like kale, collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, and endive. Also try fruit and veggies like small pieces of apple, orange, yams, carrots, and berries.

Some argue that eating large amount of pothos is bad because it stops absorption of calcium, but there are members on here who's chameleons have eaten entire plants (pothos) with no troubles.

They have oxalates that bind to calcium.

The really should offer Cheeleon 101 at all the major universities :p

I actually do offer him other various greens as well to munch on such as Mustard Greens "I really hate the smell of them". As for gut loading my crickets I strongly believe that I do an excellent job in that. LOL my crickets are FAT! I have tones of food I feed my crickets. I feed them carrots, Roman Lettuce, Flukers' Orange cricket food, Flukers High-Calcium Cricket Diet, and other various veggies.

I wouldn't try to feed romain too often as it has more phos than calcium, which crickets certainly dont need more of! :) Fluckers cricket diet doesn't offer much nutrition for your chameleon. It's great for the crickets though...

Your saying that I would get better gut loaded results for feeding my crickets Veggies and Greens? Can you please list a few good food options for my crickets that would best suite me Chams? Thanks!

Pretty much anything sandrachameleon recommends in her blogs :) she also has stuff for a dry gutload or you can buy one. There is this stuff on here called cricket crack that is awesome, there are other members on here that sell dry gutloads as well.

For the fruit and veggie part greens like kale, mustard greens, collard greens, dandelion green, endive, escarole, turnip greens, and parsely are all high in calcium. Veggies like squash (winter variety tend to be higher in calcium), carrots, and sweet peppers are all good choices. Fruits like papaya, oranges, and raspberries are high in calcium, but other fruits like apple and other berries can be used as well.

Here's a link with veggies and fruits listed in order according to their ca : phos ratio. Just stay away from broccoli, spinach, and tomatoes.
