egg question

ok now that i know i have a female, i keep reading she will lay eggs , i may sound silly but i got to ask. She can't have babies unless they are fertilized right??

and how do i know what to watch for if she does need to lay eggs

right. If she has eggs, you will see weight gain most likely, alot of climbing towards the bottom looking for a place to lay, loss of appetite

Hiya, just to say, it's not a silly question at all. Some animals do have virgin births, it's called parthenogenesis & is known to happen in some shark species, scorpians, fleas and even some reptiles. I love science lol. sorry, I'm such a nerd

I'm not sure what you mean by "can't have babies unless fertilized". She can develop and lay a clutch of eggs without being bred. Those eggs will be infertile and won't hatch "babies". When she gets close to laying you will be able to see and fell them when you gently palpate the back half of her body. They'll look and feel like m&m's inside her. She will also be hanging around the bottom of cage. I believe over feeding would lead to developing an infertile clutch. Try to limit her feeding when she gets older if you don't want her to lay.

Yes she can. Chameleons are reproducing machines. It's part of their survival strategy. So yes, even tho she's never seen a male she can develop a clutch of infertile eggs and have to lay them or get egg bound and die. Like I said before try not to over feed her and that will lessen the chance of her developing a clutch. Don't starve her either, just be careful not to over do it.

I think she means fertilized meaning the eggs will hatch into babies. Unfertilized eggs obviously willnot. That is the way I understood it anyways.

They will lay eggs regardless. Basically, if they mate, they will hatch. If she has not been mated, they will not hatch.
